Elf's Big Post of Doom - Life update, fandom and more

* So I know it has been forever since I've posted much beyond fic here. I rarely post more than once every few months now, but I am still here and I do read through my flists here and at LJ, but I spend more of my time at Tumblr. If you have one, and would like to follow me there, I'm elfflame there, too. I am also at Polyvore as elfflame, if anyone has an account there. I haven't been doing as much there recently, but I still glance in there from time to time and get bursts of creativity there. I love it.

* Family is doing well. Mom seems happy in the new place, and the kids love having my parents right there. Niece is always running down to spend time with her, and now that nephew is more mobile, he's doing so, too. Dad went on a ski trip about a month ago and decided to pretend to be a stunt skiier and did a 360 off an icy mogul on the slope and dislocated his shoulder. The prognosis from the doctor is that it is healing, but he did break it a little as well. They're muddling along, though it's a great deal harder now that he only has one arm to use. At least sis and brother-in-law are right there.

* Work! I have been working. I was at the very end of my rope, and thinking I would have to do some things I really wasn't looking forward to when my temp place finally called with a job. I am now working for a company in Eastlake, just south of the University Bridge, and the job I was initially doing was right up my alley. Then someone in the department decided to retire, so they felt me out about doing that job, so now I have a definite permanent job. We just have to wait for my contract with the temp place to be up before they hire me on permanent. Co-workers are great. Lots of great people to talk to. And the job itself is pretty brainless, so that's fine. Means I can think of other things while I work. Like stories. The scary part of the job is coming up in about two weeks, when we send out a mass mailing. I get to scan in and update the department on what we've gotten back. But currently we're in the off time, so I've been able to do the other job, which has been nice.

* One of the co-workers brought in her new laptop last week to show me Scrivener. I knew of it from all the jabber on the NaNoWriMo boards about it, but I'd never tried it myself, because I figured I couldn't afford it. Turns out it's $40, which is definitely doable, and there are some major selling qualities... So I downloaded it Friday night, and spent a good portion of yesterday playing with it and putting in info for my Nano from 2009, which was the first original Nano I've done. The story has a few major flaws, so I'm going to use the original more as an outline and guide of where to take the new one. Still not finished inputting everything for it into the program, but I have plans to set up a bunch more. But my plan is to play with it on the weekends (you get 30 non-consecutive days free, a major selling point on its own) until I get offered perm at my job, then buy it.

* Speaking of Nano, I still haven't finished my Nano for this last year. I'm well over 60k now, and I "won," so it's mostly just been trying to get myself to finish it. Still love it, though. And I am getting toward the end. I think I have 10-15k left at least... That's the next project that gets put into Scrivener.

* And one more NaNo note...my previous Nano, the second set of H/D fairy tales, is incomplete here on IJ, and still unedited. Not sure if I want to finish posting the rest at this late date, unless I'm specifically asked. So we'll see. I've been working on editing my NaNos with Wolfish Cat, and we just finished the first set of H/D fairy tales, so next comes the Sultan's Slave. :) Looking forward to that one.

* Cats are still around, though the girl seems to want to be hurt, because she keeps waking me very early in the morning. Anyone have advice on stopping that, because the lack of sleep is really starting to wear on me. Boy is slowing down, which worries me, but he hasn't had one of his attacks in years. Knock on wood that he won't.

* TV: Still watching a lot of tv. Mad Men, Grimm, and Castle are my most-favorite these days. Still haven't caught up with Supernatural. And watch way too much reality tv. Would really like that trend to go away. I think unless something great happens on Revolution soon, I'll stop watching that one. Just...nothing there. It's too bad, too. And Defiance isn't a whole lot better. The alien Malfoy family is...yeah... Looking forward to seeing White Collar and Warehouse 13 again. And I know that Haven was renewed, too, though that probably won't pop up for a few more months. Getting towards the end of Season 3 of Glee with Foodie. Enjoyed Matt Bomer, and loved Unique...but then I loved Alex on the Glee Project (I did say I watched a lot of reality TV, right?), so it was great to see him again. He and Damion were my top two, and I couldn't stand the other two. Foodie and I generally watch two episodes of whichever show and a movie, but with Doctor Who on right now, we've been watching that instead and rounding out the evening with some Red Dwarf. It's been great fun rewatching the show. More so because she's never gotten to see them in order like this before. :) Reminds me of the 90s when I got to see it at Norwescon...

* Future plans: hearing possible whispers of Lubricus, which I would absolutely adore going to if it happens, but I'm nowhere in the loop on that one, and I don't know if I'll be in the middle of a mailing when it happens, so I might not be able to get the time off. I'm also hoping to go back to Norwescon, given that I haven't been to one since the late 90s. I miss it. It would be fun to actually go to panels, and meet some of the locals I know from LJ. :)

* Genealogy is going well... I had another distant cousin contact me, this one from one of the skimpy branches of my family tree, so that made me very happy. I'm looking forward to more contact with her. As of this moment, my family tree file has more than 4600 individuals in it, most of whom were hand-entered by me. I've been being more diligent about recording where information came from, and it's all starting to really pull together. I love doing it, I just hate my brick walls... Particularly the German Jewish contingent. Every time I start to look into that branch, I just get very depressed. I'm lucky. My grandfather's father got them out of Germany in 33, but there were some extended family members of his wife's family who might not have been so lucky. If anyone is interested in reading more, or would like help with their own family tree, just let me know. I love talking about this stuff, and helping others get set up.

* Kindle: I've been reading more. Still mostly fanfiction, but slowly leaking into original works I've been able to find here and there, and the occasional actual book, but I prefer my Kindle because it's small and easy to use, and I don't have to deal with heavy books in my bag, or how badly I'm battering paperbacks. I did find myself a toy that helped me to find more fanfic (and original fic), if anyone is interested: Fan Fiction Downloader. It only helps with certain sites, but one of them is FF.net/Fictionpress, so between those and AO3, there's a ton of fic to read. I think the next thing I'll likely do with it is either connect to the library or buy myself a copy of Hunger Games. I've still not read it, and I really need to. That series and the Percy Jackson books are at the top of my list. Not sure what I'll read beyond that. Any suggestions, folks?

And that's all, though I'll probably do that AO3 meme that's been floating around. Since I didn't do it at year-end this past year.

Update on Me and NaNoWriMo

I know I've been pretty silent this year. Here's what's been going on.

* Still no job, but I've been slowly selling off my Magic cards, which has helped somewhat.

* Parents moved in with my sister and her family into a huge place in Eastern Seattle right next to the Arboretum in Montlake, if you know the Seattle Area. It's a gorgeous house. Mom and dad have a nice little downstairs apartment that's about the size of their old house's main floor, and tons of storage space for everyone, so they're not really missing the downstairs at all. Even better, Mom has an elevator so she no longer has to deal with stairs, which was becoming an increasingly difficult issue, so we're all glad of that. Sis is now working on getting her to stop driving, as the MS is slowly getting worse, and it's taking her longer and longer to get to the car. We've started bi-weekly dinners, which has been nice. More time with all of them, which I am bad about, so it's a perfect excuse to see them all and stay updated. Sis and the family will be heading down to brother-in-law's family for Thanksgiving, which is their norm, so I'm going to help mom and dad with thanksgiving in the main house, and I'm going to try to make mashed potatoes in sis's crock pot. Wish me luck...

* Also in family news, my grandmother passed away this summer. She was my last living grandparent, and I will miss her, but I was never as close to her as I was to my other grandmother who died in 2010. We had a lovely service at their church in Bellevue, and her pastor, who was just about to retire, was able to do the service. It ended up being the last she did at the church, so it made it doubly special. I did a slideshow of pictures of grandma's life, which was wonderful, and everyone wanted copies, so I'm doing slideshows of all the grandparents for the family for Christmas. Except that every time I see the shots of my grandfather who died in 91, I start crying. Makes it hard to go through the photos. But I'm getting there.

* I am not a business person, and don't know how to sell myself, so despite posting some signs, I have yet to get a bite on my genealogy business. If anyone has some extra money laying around, and are curious about their family history, I'd certainly love to help. Comment below, and we can talk. :)

* I have, however, gotten a couple of nibbles from the folks in my building about cat-sitting. For those who don't know, I have two cats, and have lived with cats since my junior year of high school. I love them. It's one reason we moved into the building, that it was cat friendly. Apparently the manager has been watching people's cats (and a few other small animals) for free, but it's driving her up the wall, especially with how picky some people are, so she asked me to help, then suggested I offer a service. Some people are still taking advantage of her and saying they can't pay, but...well, at least this way, she's got someone to shove them at now. So I have one job over the Thanksgiving week watching two cats who are very sweet (well, once's sweet and one's feral, so doesn't get on with anyone but her owner), and then another around Christmas. Feeling pretty good about all this. Not a *ton* of money, but might be enough to round out to my rent at the end of the month, especially if I sell off a few more cards.

* The current TV season has been a bit depressing. No more Eureka, Fringe is ending, way too many reality tv shows, and the one hope I had for the season, Revolution, is kind of a bust... Sci Fi has one show I might try, but that doesn't start until next year. And...Elementary is not working for me. So...it's all left me kind of meh. And then, of course, we have Who (Gaaah!), Downton (*sobs*), and Misfits (not sure about that season opener...), which have at least been more interesting than the American TV shows this season. Oh, and Merlin, which is also as depressing...It's frankly been hard to watch, though Mordred is pretty, at least.

* On the other hand, I have been watching Buffy season 4 (my favorite) and Angel season 1 with Foodie, which has been great fun. So many great episodes this season...we just watched Hush last week. All time best ever. I can't wait to see what she thinks when Oz returns...Or what she'll think of Lorne, but I guess he doesn't show until next season. I've definitely missed him in this one. I think it could have used his charm.

* And in other TV news...I've been watching Supernatural. I'm still not *hooked* hooked, but I am enjoying it. My description to others is that it feels sort of like the Hardy Boys to Buffy's Nancy Drew. :) And I came across a comment on Tumblr that I quite agree with today: "It's nothing like I expected, but exactly as described." Heh.

* Oh, yes, and Nano. I'm doing another original piece this year, so it's not been posted anywhere online. I wouldn't mind feedback, though, if people are interested. I've got two people I'm emailing the story as I go, section by section. The story is a Steampunk world adventure using archetypes I'm familiar with, which is to say, based on favorite characters/RP characters. There's more to it than that, of course. If you're not sure, but curious, my profile is here, and I've posted a snippet and blurb about the story.

* Fanfic is now on the back burner, because life is just too stressful at the moment. I stopped at D_D sometime earlier this year, but I do have a story I'm about to send in for K_K this year, and I also have a story for the Lucius Big Bang that should be going up sometime this month, so keep your eyes out for those. Otherwise, I'm trying to focus on job-hunting and original writing, so...wish me luck.

Happiness Is:

* Never dipping below your minimum word-count all month, especially on a NaNoWriMo month, and finishing your story well ahead of schedule.  (currently over 53k and counting.  Almost done now, folks.  Still have a bunch of chapters to post here)

* Introducing a friend to a TV show you adore, and finding her enjoying it too. (Started watching Buffy with a friend from episode one.  We just finished Season two this past weekend.  Unfortunately we have to take a break to deal with the Holidays and then we'll be watching Glee, but I can't wait to see her reaction when it comes to Season 3...so much to see still! If you're curious, we've been liveblogging it and the other shows we're watching here)

* Having made it through a year alone and still being here successfully, even if life is not perfect. (Still need a job, but I have enough money to make it through the next few months.  Any help on the job front would be much appreciated)

* A new movie I am very much looking forward to in the theatres.  (Why can't it be December 16 already????)

* A family that's here for me, including a mother-in-law despite him.

* An amazing group of friends, particularly three in specific, who have kept me sane this year, and without whom I doubt I would have made it through this year. <3

State of the Elf

So...what have I been up to since my last posting on the subject?

* Still looking for a job.  Had an interview yesterday that went very well.  I'm a bit nervous when it comes to the location (an hour and ten minutes to two hours, depending on busses and time of day), but it could be really good for me.  And it would pay what I needed.

* Playing on Polyvore:
Elfflame there if you want to add me.
I've been working on a series of "cards" there based on HP.  I've finished the first, and am debating what the second should be.  The first is Harry's Year. Let me know if there's anyone I missed.  I somehow managed to forget Terry Boot for a bit, so I wouldn't be surprised if there were others.
Ideas I'm playing with for the next set: Dumbledore's Army, the Next Generation, the Weasleys (from Molly and Arthur on), Death Eaters, Order of the Phoenix (then and now, possibly with different borders for each), Hogwarts Professors, Marauders Generation, Quidditch - Hogwarts, Quidditch - Professional (maybe).

* Playing on Listal:
Just came up with a new idea on Listal today that I love: Classic Sci-fi Tropes.  Have three of the twelve lists done.  I was having a good time with it.

* Playing on Kongregate:
My favorite game series there, Gem Craft, has uploaded their latest game, Gemcraft Labyrinth.
Also, if you have an account at Kongregate, I'd love to follow you there. :)

* Watching movies.  Lately I've been finding lots of movies to watch that I didn't want to/didn't get to see in the theatres:
The Young Victoria, which was wonderful.
A Single Man, which is a brilliant if sad film.
The King's Speech, which is well worth watching for any Anglophile, particularly those interested in the Royal family or English History.
Despicable Me, which was cute.
National Treasure: Book of Secrets, pretty fun, but definitely not a thinky movie.
Shrek Forever After, not as bad as I'd feared it would be.  I like it better than the third, actually.
The Accidental Husband, which was fun, but definitely a light chick-flick.
Wanted, which I'm glad I took a pass at.  So cliche.  But fun for the action aspect.
Megamind, another that I'm not sad for missing in theatres.  It's okay, but I prefer Despicable Me.
Taken, which was SO preachy it made my eyes roll.  Liam, what are you doing?
and
The Road, which was really horribly dark.  I should have expected it, but...yeah.  If you like dark/sad/depressing, it's a good film.  Just be warned.

* Writing--nearly done with my D_D for the month.  I'm hoping to finish it tomorrow for posting Monday.
Also working on re-editing my Arthurian story...going slow because I keep getting distracted.
Considering a few stories here and there, but nothing definite.
Also, I made a collection at AO3, for anyone who wants to post to it--BDSM fic.  I know I have a lot of BDSM folks on my list, so if you have an account (or want one), definitely post to it!  If you don't know how, just nudge me, and I'll help.  Right now there's only 38 fics in there, so I'd love to see at least 10 times that...

* Home - Sis has been helping me clean up and organize room by room, though I backslid a little, but not too badly.  I'm such a bad housekeeper.
Got a new and really fancy printer that I love thanks to mother-in-law.  It's great to be able to print again, at least.

I think that's all for now...  How's everyone else?  Still out there?

Apr. 27th, 2011

A mini update and a rant

For those whom I have not told yet, I'm getting a divorce.  Things are still ongoing, and he's not being a total arse; I am not okay, but I am coping.  And I do have support.  Anyone in the Seattle area, if you know of an office job that doesn't involve answering phones *PLEASE* let me know...I really need one so I can stay in my apartment.  Thanks.

And now on to the rant.

I know some of the people who follow me here know my feelings about gender identity, but if you don't, here's what I think in a nutshell.  People are people, whatever bits they have, and shouldn't be forced to conform just because they look a certain way, or were born with certain bits.  You should be who you feel you are, not who people want you to be.  Simple as that.

That said, I've seen this growing trend, both at Polyvore and at Tumblr, for gender-swap, and I'm really not fond of it, but usually I can just scroll past and ignore it.  Despite my stated feelings above, it does nothing for me, and just feels more like wish fulfillment on the part of the fan than anything else.

But I do have to say that some really bug me for one important reason: taking a character of colour and making them white is NOT okay.  Ever.  For ANY reason.  I don't care how much you like your choice, it just feels wrong.

I'm not going to name names here, or point to a specific post, but I just saw a set at Polyvore which cast a white actor as a black actress's male version.  And he's an actor I adore.  But he's WHITE.  Perhaps if the other in the pair had been a black actor for a white actress, it might not bug me so much, but this seems to be a constant trend, and I really just had to say this to get it off my chest.

Both of the shows I can think of where I've seen this sort of thing have been the sole non-white character in the show, or as near to such as can be, which only makes this sort of thing worse.

I don't care if people link to this, in fact, please feel free to do so. I'd open comments if I knew I wouldn't get spammed to death by the bots, but if I get a request, I will.  I'd definitely love to know why people out there like this sort of thing, and what on earth would motivate them to cast a white character in place of a black, because otherwise it smacks of bias, even if not a conscious one.

ETA: Comment settings have been changed, but unless I have you friended, they won't show up until I've seen them and allow them to be posted. Again, this is to save me from the spam-bots, though I will delete comments that are racist/do not add to the conversation.

So please link this anywhere you feel the need.

[No Subject]

So, trying something new for a bit in an attempt to get myself to post more.  I have a bunch of different things I'd like to post about, but moving (a little) away from fandom.  Slightly more personal, but still doing my at-least-monthly fic and also doing more pic-spams and lists for people to enjoy as well.  I'd love to get back to my Seattle posts.  So wish me luck.  We'll see how this goes. :)

Plans for the week:
* Call temp agency to get back on the books, if they'll have me
* Possible Jaye Davidson picspam
* Start thinking about next month's D_D
* Read Foodie's second chapter
* Type up my grandmother's story of my grandfather's life and post to Genealogy blog

I've been trying to get my cooking mojo back.  I've never been a great cook, but I used to be okay at it.  Now I suck.  So I've tried a recipe that was quite good.  Very basic, and actually worked out quite well.  Still trying to get the hang of timing, but I think I'll get there.  Just need to get around to doing it.  Might try something this week, or I might wait until next week, but if I find good stuff, I'll definitely share it here.

Johnny Weir...Though I didn't talk about it here, I'm one of the many who fell for him shortly before/because of the Olympics.  I adore him, and I've loved seeing the Johnny-love all over my flist, though it was hard to watch the men's skating because he wasn't given a fair shake.  I don't know where this sudden urge for "Maleness" in men's skating came from, but it's obviously an attempt to rewrite history, because men's skating has always been a little swish.  And I love that Johnny went through all that with not only a smile, but he was fantastic.  Maybe not gold-calibur, but I think he did better than some of those who scored above him.  So in his honor, a Johnny quote--"Out of ugly, I think the most important thing to do in life is make something beautiful."
And a picture of Johnny on the ice with his beautiful pink tassel:

That's all for now.  See you all on the flip side. :)

Jul. 25th, 2009

Good bye, job

So, as of 5 PM yesterday, I am now officially unemployed.  My own doing, and I'm glad I did it.  I know it was the right choice.  I loved the people there, but the job was only getting more and more stressful.

I spent a lot of time yesterday saying good bye to everyone.  Got lots of hugs and lots of presents, and plenty of joking "how dare you"s from folks.  The thing is?  I wasn't there that long.  I started back in July of 07, but it took me until February of 08 (with a few-months-break in between there) to become an official employee.  But I've made more friends there than I ever have any place else I've ever worked.  I'll miss seeing them every day, and talking to them.  It made the day quite bittersweet.

Ended up having a plant, a balloon, and three bags to take home (one my usual bag I carry with me every day, but still...).  Luckily I'd made plans with [info]turtle_avenger last night, so she picked me up, and we went to Red Robin's for supper, then went to see a girlyflick, "The Ugly Truth." :D  I spent a lot of time covering my face in embarrassment for the characters, but it was fun and light and a perfect way to end the day.

Now I just have to remind myself to do my own work every day.  I have a number of long-neglected chores to get to, and two big fics to write, not to mention the usual D_Ds and plotting for my Nano this year...Maybe even a Merlin fic or two.  So I will still be busy, but easier to get to--I think. :)  I'm going to force myself to get out of the house at least every other day, just for my own health, because I tend to be disinclined to move, which is very not good for me... :P

Bought myself a new pasta maker--for cooking in the microwave.  Haven't tested it yet, but here's hoping.  Helps that I'll only be making it for myself.  Means that there won't be a lot of boilover to deal with. Wish me luck!

Also--saw HBP a week ago Friday.  Still getting my thoughts together about it.  I'll be seeing it again Monday, so I'll probably post a proper review then. :)

Birthday again

A different year, a different attitude. One step away from 40, and somehow, I just feel calmer all of a sudden.

Landmarks in the past year:
Got a new job. The first "real" job I've had in over ten years--since I went back to school.
My sister had her baby. Whom I adore like nothing else. Spent yesterday with the two of them. She is the happiest baby... I love them both. :)

Other than that, nothing's really changed much. Still write slash, still do too much at once. I'm trying to be more pragmatic about it, though.

Got sick this past weekend, so I've spent most of this week at home, trying to cough up a lung or something, but I've been able to distract myself with a new game: Spore. It's a lot of fun. I've only made it through the first two levels so far, but I'm looking forward to finding out more about the game, and I've already started three different races. :) If you're a Sims or Sim City fan, I highly recommend it.

Finished my D_D. Just waiting on one beta before I post it. Not what I'd intended to write, but I like it. I think others might, as well.

Plans for my boys today - Harry and Draco are renewing their vows in a legal ceremony today... And I think one of my other boys will be happily distracted as well. We'll see. :D

Thank you to everyone who has so far wished me a happy birthday, and thank you to Ceria and Snapesgirl for the special presents. I enjoyed them both very much. :D

State of the Elf

Geh.  When was the last time I did one of these?

No more online, journal-based RP for me.  I left the last one a while back.  I miss talking to the folks, but I don't miss the stress.  And I will never Mod another RPG again.  Now if someone would just stop waving such pretty Yaoi boys at me, I might have a chance... :P

Work is still hell.  We did our big meeting thing, and changes are proceeding apace.  Some of which actually are helping, though from the current mess, you wouldn't know it.  I have a feeling that I'll be getting in more OT real soon.  Already did an hour tonight.  And I deserve ten million treats for how good I'm being about work.  So I bought myself a few fun things, including something someone on my flist suggested: My Gender Workbook.  I'm finding it fascinating so far.  Haven't gotten far into it, but I definitely like it.  Also got another name book, a couple of other books, the Pelican Brief on DVD, and a game for my DS.  I'm still trying to decide what else I should get...

D_D...  I really loved my idea when it came to me, but I can't concentrate enough lately to write, and what I have sucks utterly.  Saturday will be it, I'm afraid.  I hate leaving it that late, but I have to go see Hellboy tomorrow if I want to retain my sanity.  (see treats comment above.)

Haven't spent our Tax refund.  I want to get all new sheets and pillows, and a new bolster for my comforter or two.  And an ergonimic keyboard.  Not sure what else I need, aside from a maid and storage. :P

Dr Who...An amazing episode, though I know many are upset by it.  I won't say much here, but I thought they did a great job, even with the issues so many have with it.

Stargate this weekend!  Wooo!

Sister and hubby have finally moved back to Seattle.  They moved down to the Bay area for his job shortly before they were married (he works for Google), and he finally managed to convince them he could do the same thing he was doing down there up here.  So they've been making the rounds with my niece, who is utterly adorable, and whom I cannot get enough of (and if you know me very well, you know how little I like babies, so that's saying a lot).  Shower next weekend.  I need to find time to buy things... *sighs*

Tired.

Been spending an inordinate amount of time at a new site I found: Listal, because it's easier than writing or thinking.  You can list movies, books, tv shows, video games, and DVDs that you have, love, or want to see.  And you can make lists within each category, and reviews.  I'm loving it.  Does anyone else have an account there, so I can friend them, and if not, do you want one?  I've already done reviews for all seven HP books.  And a review each for Contact, Dogma, and Matrix.  I'm trying to decide what I should review next.  Anyone have any suggestions?

Erm...sure I've forgotten many, many things.  But it's a start, right?

Memeish sort of thing

New toy - Wordle.  Makes word-clouds out of text you paste into their generator.  So, to distract myself from coming unpleasantness, I present 5 of my fics in word-cloud form.  And anyone who can guess which fic each of them is will be gifted with a drabble based on the fic in question, or on the recipient's own choice of prompt and pairing -- next week, after the unpleasantness is over.  Simply click on the thumbnail, and you will be taken to a larger version of the image, where most words will be a bit more readable.  The titles of the images are the only other hint you will get (unless no one gets them, in which case I might offer hints next week).  Good luck.

As to the unpleasantness mentioned above?  I have a big work meeting that will basically take all Friday night, and 8 hours of my Saturday (basically a regular work day), so I will be out of touch from about 4 PM on on Friday, even by email, aside from a few stolen minutes here and there.  Just so everyone knows.  Will be back Sunday.  Wish me luck. :P

Oh, and if anyone likse this idea enough to steal it, feel free. :D

State of the Elf again

* Job is...nuts.  They've been getting twice the work I'm able to do in a day.  And have no one else doing it.  And I'm scrambling to be able to do as much as I am.  Plus, I'm not really doing it the way they want to end up having it be done.  Someone else does a bunch of lookup and callbacks that I couldn't do yet because I didn't have access to the relevant system yet.  So eventually they want to have three of us doing the lookup, callbacks, and entering all at once.  Which would slow things down incredibly much.  I don't think they're quite cognizant of that just yet. :P

* Have been wibbling back and fort on a reclist of Anj classics.  So...the question is, would there be any call for it, or does it seem redundant or silly, and I should just keep my big yap shut?

* Have not been playing in my games at all of late.  I suck.  Mostly because I can't really at work without feeling like I'm breaking rules, and by the time I get home, I'm wiped.

But I have been able to rp a bit through email and a few private rps...

Harry and Draco have been together since September of 2006, and got married in 2007 (realtime).  One private ceremony with just very immediate family (Lucius, Severus, Sirius and Remus) in the Netherlands where it was legal for males at the time (the rp took place in 2002 at the time, I think), and one public ceremony several months later in the summer that was just for show.  And now that we've moved them to "today," Harry's asked him again, now that it's legal for men to be able to marry each other in England.  So he's been working on that.

And my Blaise has finally gained a Theo.  We set it up that they were together in school a bit and then separated by the war.  And now they're engaged to be married.  My Blaise is very much of the "love doesn't exist" mindset because of his mother, but his friends and lovers have convinced him otherwise, and so now he's shocked, but very happy.  It's odd, but sweet.

* Writing - finished my HP Vamp fic, but for the editing, which will begin this weekend.  Need to start my D_D, and have ideas for another fic as well that wants to push the D_D right out of the way.  And if I finish all that, I might claim another prompt at HP Vamp.  Oh, and I have drabbles to do, too. :)  And I have this amazing fic idea that I *have* to find the time to do, too.

* Also…have been having an idea that I’d like to do one of those “commentary tracks” for one of my fics.  Anyone have any preferences for which?  I might do a poll at some point.

* [info]hd_worldcup.  If you’re not watching, why not?  I haven’t had much chance to read what’s been posted so far, but I have enjoyed what I’ve read.

* Politics - I'm starting to get annoyed with both candidates.  I was so thrilled when they both ended up as frontrunners, because I thought it meant we could avoid the “vote for me because I’m a …” argument.  Why they couldn’t just run on the issues…  Well, I suppose I know: they’re too close in most beliefs, so they need better ways to separate themselves.

* Have been considering switching my default icon to something different.  Not sure to what yet, though.

C. Do not tag the person who tagged you or say that you tag "whoever wants to do it."
I don't tag.

State of the Elf

Soo...  many things.  Again.

* Grandmother moving this weekend.  Didn't actually do anything cause I have no car, and so have no way of transporting her, just realizing that she's much further away from me now.  Moved across the water to Bel-Red Road over in the East side, if you know where that is.

* Job front - Meant to announce this before, but with job stuff and the Cup fic which I've been struggling to do, I haven't had the time.  I am now a real employee at the place I've been working on and off since July.  about two months there, then a couple not, then back in late November, I think it was.  And I've been there ever since.  It's  a bit odd.  I hadn't realized how long it had been since I'd had a "real" job.  I quit my last back in 95 to go back to college.  Just kind of wierd.  But it's good, so far.  We'll see how stressed I get.

* Writing -
Cup fic is done, and in the editing process.  Lots of helpful people, so I'm very excited.  Could well be my best fic ever.  Okay, maybe not, but I'm very fond of the bunny, even now, and saying that after having finished it?  Not usually the case, so I'm feeling good about it.
D_D for this month has been started.  Starring Blaise again, shockingly enough.  Usually Draco doesn't let anyone else go more than a month at a time, but he's shockingly happy and sated these days. ;)
HP Vamp is having their Free Range fest again, and I have several bunnies I'm thinking of claiming.  I just really need to remind myself that I can't.  Maybe one or two at the most, and certainly not until I have at least 1000 words done for D_D.

* Cable guy was here today, and after much hassle with finding a modem that would work, we are connected again.  All I can do is hope that this will be the end of our random cut-offs when we're trying to load pages or chat with folks.

* Have someone new that's kind of been percolating in my head since JKR made the Post-warts family trees: Lorcan Scamander.  I don't know why he specifically is calling to me.  Possibly the geeky name.  He's pretty different from most of my usual muses.  Not sure if anything will come of it, but you never know...

* Posted all my H/D stuff over at Skyhawke now, aside from unpublished.  So there's a ton there, now, and the ratings system seems interesting to me.  I've stuck most of my drabbles in Ship-related "stories," one chapter per drabble, just to keep from having a hundred teensy little stories on my page, but anything over 500 words has its own story.  I'm not so good to sticking to under 500, I've noticed. ;)  So...the question is, what ship should I do next?

* A request: Have been reading chaptered stories at work, but it's getting hard to find things I should have read that aren't long-one shots (rather prohibitive with the amount of time I have to read, so anything over 10,000 words as a one-shot is too much.).  So...  I'd love suggestions.  Particularly H/D, or next-gen, though Regulus seems to be popping up in my mind a lot lately.  I don't suppose there are any chaptered fics about him?

And how is everyone else out there?

Life update

1. Just spent four days with my sister down in Northern California.  Plane trip down was a bit odd--got the wrong tickets.  I usually go to San Jose instead of San Fran, but we weren't paying enough attention so I went to SF.  Except that they were having weather issues that day, and so we were delayed for quite a while, and then eventually re-routed to Oakland.  It was interesting.  But the trip itself was nice.  Not someone who tends to go out and do lots of things, but we actually had a very eventful visit.  We went to the San Fran Genealogy library and spent several hours there, though we found nothing either for our family or her husband's family.  We did find interesting trees that connected to his online, though.  All sorts of interesting tidbits.  Watched all of the first season of Project Runway, which I hadn't seen.  It was interesting to see how it evolved throughout that first season.  Did a bit of shopping, played video games--DS and Wii, and even a bit of PS3, and yesterday we went to see 27 Dresses.  I quite liked it, actually.  And we saw two interesting previews that I'm interested to see: Miss Pettigrew's Day Out, and The Accidental Husband.  They both look intriguingly different.

2. Wrote another Malcest fic for [info]pornish_pixies's Magical Device challenge.  Will be posting it here tomorrow, I think.
2b. On a related note...I've been invited to join [info]pornish_pixies, so you will be seeing more of that sort from me, I think. :D

3. Other writing: Starting over from scratch on my [info]daily_deviant fic, but I think it will be better for it.  And I have a bunny for my [info]hd_cup fic, so as soon as the one is finished, I'll be starting the second.  I'm hoping to get that done before the end of the month so that I can start the next D_D fic before the 1st.

4. Still haven't done my review of Sweeney Todd.  I did enjoy it.  Wasn't everything it could be, but I did enjoy Johnny Depp.  I think it's another example of just how versitile he is.

5. Job stuff--might be getting a permanent job soon.  More on that if it happens. :)

6. Caught up on flists for the night, but not on reading things I've tabbed from the list, so if you have something you'd like me to comment on/read/etc, feel free to link me here, and I'll get back to it tomorrow.

*snugs* Missed you all!

List time!

1 - Didn't like [info]hp_fridayfive or [info]fannish5 today, so no entry there...

2 - Huge hugs to [info]littlecup, who had her baby yesterday.

3 - Job news--went to an interview for a temp job today.  I'll be working in the tallest building in Seattle (formerly known as the Columbia Center) on the 34rd floor.  I'm working for a real estate insurance company.  A bit nervous about it, because it could be stressful, but we'll see...  Means I'll be more available during the weekends now.

Mods for [info]hpficlist, I'll still be available in the evenings if there are problems.  But I'll likely take Saturdays or Sundays for my day until this is over.

RP people, particularly those of you outside the states, I'm afraid this means most of my gaming will be in the evening as well, or weekends.  If there's a particular plot you would like to do, just let me know, and we can talk it out in emails at the very least.  I will try to stay active as much as possible.

4 - Speaking of [info]hpficlist, it's been kind of quiet the last few days, but there are lots of links to follow, and I'm about to go add a few more ships I saw that could be added...  Please come check us out?  It won't be much of a resource without links to follow, right?

5 -*whines* I want season 4 of QAF, already!  And Sims: Seasons, too!  Oh, well, at least I'll have job money I can use for it... :D

6 - Still planning on doing a book review, just not sure what and when.  But it is coming.

Post of doom day

Have found myself feeling rather down lately, with no real sure idea of why.  A lot of little things, I suppose, but there's so many great things to counter with that I'm just not sure why the little things are affecting me like this.  I'd assume it was PMS, but that rarely lasts me more than a day, then goes away.  This one seems to be lasting.

Bus never showed this afternoon, so I ended up catching the other route, which means a much longer walk, in the sun, during rush hour.  Luckily there was a very nice man who actually let me cross the street at some point, but still, walking home in the sun is not my idea of a good time.  My face feels burned, and I'm sure it'll be scarlet come morning. :S

So, if I respond oddly to anyone, or don't respond, or respond snippily, you know why.  It's not you.

I just want it to go away.

Game stuff...

Haven't been playing enough lately, and no matter what I do, I can't seem to get into it.  I know I owe at least one tag.  Probably more.  If I do, throw them at me and I'll get to them sometime this weekend.

Ab Dissimilis seems to be off to a good start.  We've got a good large handful of characters to work with, though I still really want to find a Sirius before we play.  But we've got a start date.  August 20th.  Hopefully someone will have shown interest by then.

[info]fannish5:
Describe five ficathons or challenges you'd like to see (like running one, only without the work!)
  1. An AU ficathon.  I've actually been considering posting something like this to see if there's any interest, actually.
  2. More ship-centric remixes, like [info]hd_remix.
  3. A pastiche challenge, where the writers have to base the plot of their story on a classic story, fairy tale, or other well-known story.
  4. An unusual POV challenge, where the story is told from a painting, or animal, or some other unusual and usually neglected POV.
  5. A Ravenclaw/Hufflepuff character ficathon.  No one writes enough for these two houses, and I'd love to see more.  I know I'm just as guilty as the rest of fandom in that regard, but I'd love to see what people could come up with.

Off to Oblivion.  If anyone wants me on IM, nudge me here, and I'll pop on.

Master Post of Oh Dear Lord...

Yeah, so it's been a while since I posted, so it's time for another mega-post about everything I have to share. :D

HP:
I have been going nuts writing lately, but I think I'm approaching the end of my fic for Draco's birthday.  Then I'll have to start my next [info]daily_deviant piece,  I'm thinking I'll do Sirius/Draco. :D  Wish me luck....  Also, I wrote an AU story that I finished last year, and promised a sequel on.  I got several reviews yesterday that finally pushed my interest over the edge.  And I do have most of the prologue finished.  I have one beta, but I've found that more betas is better betaing, so if anyone wants to read through the orginal and/or hold my hand through the sequel, I'd love you forever.  It's a Harry raised by the Malfoys fic, year by year.

RP has been lots of fun, but there's so much going on that it's hard to keep up.  Blaise has been in a steady relationship for two months as of yesterday (OMG!), George is having a bit of a crisis because he's realized his feelings for Fred are a bit more than brotherly, Padma's still in no-man's land, and hasn't really played yet.... (Jessi, I'm looking at you.  Are you up to a thread together?)  And Remus has been having more sex than he ever dreamed he would, but he's having a few jealousy issues...

My RP Characters' pictures, if anyone's curious. :D )

And now that LMOM over at [info]pervy_werewolf is over, [info]i_love_looshie will pick up.  A lot looser.  You can post anything from the past twelve months that has to do with the lovely Malfoy Patriarch.  I'm still trying to decide what to post, but I will definately be posting something each day. :D  Even if it's just the best of VC.  But the offer's only good through June, so watch and/or post now! :)

And big hugs to [info]lysa1, who knows why.   Hope it's all going well, hon. :D

A small bit of RL, too.

Tried to upgrade my computer a bit, but failed miserably.

The drawbridge right next to my workplace is being shored up because it's about 100 years old, so all the busses have been rerouted, so I now have to speed-walk five blocks uphill each night, so if I'm less than vocal when I get home, you know why.  At least I'll loose some weight, right?

My old alma matter is being thoroughly killed by the Seattle school system.  I truly believe that if it weren't for their rediculous system, it would still be an active and thriving alternative school.  But it was barely that when I left, so why should I be surprised it's gone downhill this much?  It just makes me angry, that's all. :(

Oh, and No, I'm not putting in my picture to the Fanartists Vs. Fanficcers, Anniversary Edition.  If I did, I'd lose us the battle. ;P  If you want to see me (and have me friended, cause it's flocked), I'm here.  Or you can see these...

Ickle me w/Rose       Ickle me w/Mom        Another Ickle me     And big Sister me
                                     & Grandma                                                      w/Ickle Sis

State of the Elf

Fandom stuff:

It's now officially the LMOM over at [info]pervy_werewolf, so if you need you some Remus smut, go read!  It's going on all month, and tons of amazing authors participate. :D

I can no longer participate in this, but [info]mctabby's having another friending frenzy, so if you feel you don't have enough friends, toddle on over and introduce yourself, then go check out everyone else and friend, friend, friend! :D

My second RPG I've joined still barely has any players, so the mods have decided to go AU.  Anyone care to play Severus, or Regulus?  Or maybe Narcissa or Peter?  Just about everyone from the Marauder's years are still free.  And none of the Adults from that time have been taken aside from Dumbledore.  We'd love you to join us.  Suvre is here.

And speaking of AU, I've been mulling something over today.  And I really shouldn't, cause I know how dangerous this could be, but how many people on my flist would be interested, or know people who would be interested in doing an AU ficathon?  I was having all these AU ideas, more than I'd ever be able to do, and some of them are very general, but some are quite specific...  Does anyone know of something like this out there?  Or does it seem like an interesting idea?

RL:

Sister's wedding was lovely, saw tons of people who I rarely get to, including the stray cousin.  She looked gorgeous, and they seem very happy.  Things went smoothly, aside from a slight name-mispronunciation.  Back hurts, though, cause the chairs they had there were miserable.

New job, but old job.  I'm back at Cutter and Buck scanning orders again.  It's a quiet job, and I have lots of time to think, which is nice.  Even if I don't have Net access.

Um...  I think that's everything.  Until I come up with more.
