Catch-up post for 30 Day Fanfic Meme

19 – When you have bunnies, do you sit down and start writing right away, or do you write down the idea for further use?
Depends on the bunny, though lately, they all get shoved in the closet, unless I'm lucky enough to get one that fits to an assignment I have to do.

20 –Do you ever get bunnied from other people's stories or art in the same fandom?
I have quite often, actually, though only a few have actually seen the light of day.

21 – Sequels – Have you ever written a sequel to a fic you wrote, and if so, why, and if not, how do you feel about sequels?
Many.  Some because others asked for them, some because the characters fed me more of the story after the end of what I wrote, and some because of 20 above.
I think sequels have their place, though I do believe that the best sequels (or prequels) are those that were planned for.  When they're done because people push the writer into it, or to otherwise please fans, they never have the impact of the original fic.

22 – Have you ever participated in a fest or a Big Bang? If so, write about your favorite experience in relation to one. If not, are there any you've thought about doing? And if not, why not?
I've done a Big Bang, and I've been in a few different fests.  But my favorite overall was the H/D Remix (which I am doing again this round), because I liked the format, and because the subject matter just works for me.  I can't wait to see the fics that get remixed, and you never know what will turn up.  Makes it that much more exciting. :D

23 – When you post, where do you post to? Just your journal? Just an archive? Your own personal site?
I generally only post here, though I keep trying to get my act together to archive everything at least one other place.  At the moment, the chosen place is AAOOO.  Though I've only managed to post a few fics there.  Need to get on that, really.

24 – Betaing – How many betas do you like to use to make sure there aren't any major flaws in your fic? Do you have a Beta horror story or dream story?
I would most prefer three, but I rarely manage more than two, depending on who's available, and what I'm writing.
I do remember finding one beta who I absolutely adored because she called me on everything.  It was the first time I'd ever experienced that, and it was amazingly freeing, knowing that I could trust her to call me on it.  Unfortunately, she left the fandom soon after.  I've since found another few who I adore as much, but I do miss her...

25 – Music – Do you listen to music while you write? Do you make playlists to get into a certain "mood" to write your fic? Do you need noise in general? Or do you need it completely quiet?
I tend to like to have music on, though I can't have the TV on or I get totally distracted.  I like to make playlists, especially when the characters are being difficult.  Helps me get into their mindset a bit more.

26 – What is the oddest (or funnest) thing you've had to research for a fic?
Hm.  Not sure.  I could say names, which is easy, but gets complicated depending on why you're looking for a name, and for who, but that's too easy an answer for me because I love doing it.  Clothes is always fun.  Oh, I did have to research punk rock for a character once.  Even though he was pureblood, he decided that was his one Muggle vice.  That was lots of fun.  I didn't know much about it, and had only listened to a few songs myself, but it fit with his character very well.

Hm...something I could sink into and not be depressed or otherwise cry by the end?  That would have to be Labyrinth.  The music, David Bowie, the Muppets...what else do I need? :D

A little something my hubby linked me to, that I want to save for posterity:
Scenes from an Alternate Universe Where the Beatles Accepted Lorne Green's Generous Offer

An intriguing look into the Beatles' careers, singly and as a whole.  Be warned, if you care at all for the Beatles, this is likely to require a few hankies.

Disney fans, King Arthur fans, help please?

The song "The Sword in the Stone" from the Disney movie of the same name has more than the two stanzas I have been able to find in any lyrics searches I've tried.

The two I have found are:
A legend is sung of when England was young
And knights were brave and bold
The good king had died
And no one could decide
Who was rightful heir to the throne

It seemed that the land would be torn by a war
Or saved by a miracle alone
And that miracle appeared in London town
The sword in the stone.

However, I seem to recall more, and I can't verify the lyrics anywhere.

What I remember is:
Though they tried for the sword with all their might
No knight in all the land
Could draw the wond'rus blade from its resting place
Its secrets they could not understand.

The one who was meant to rule the land
And worthy of the throne
He will seek the sword with a humble heart
And not for himself alone
He will be the one who was born to claim
The sword in the stone.

My big problem? I have no way of confirming my lyrics. Does anyone know for sure?

I'd be ever so grateful. I'd give you a credit in my story!

Seattle Post #2

Three-way tie.  I was thinking about asking for a tiebreaker, but I decided to just do them all.  This one will go beyond Seattle a bit more, because there are some wonderful animal attractions in the greater Seattle area that I have to include.

Creature Attractions )

Museums )

and a bit about Music )

And I've probably missed a number of things, but I think that's a good starting place for now, don't you?

So, I watched Camelot as played at Lincoln Center on Thursday, and it's buzzing around in my head now.  Honestly?  I wasn't overly impressed by most of the cast, and I was personally offended by the fact that my favorite character was played by someone I can't stand, but that's just me.  There was one specific stand-out--Mordred.

I should say here, that I never saw the play version, just the movie.  And so I don't know how much was part of the original Broadway version, and which was changes for a modern audience or to fit the stage.  But it does mean I'd never heard The Seven Deadly Virtues, because it's not in the movie.  Rab has decided that it's part of his soundtrack.  It's strange how many of his songs are bouncy and upbeat if...creepy.

But back to Mordred...the costume they had for him was just great fun, and the actor who did him was definitely a joy to watch.  I've only managed to find a few pictures of him in the play, both with Fran Drescher.  Picture one and Picture two.  I seriously wish I could find more, because while the outfit was outlandish, I do think it would be the coolest thing ever to use them for a PB.  Not that I have any clue who the PB would be used for... :P

Movie Review: Iron Man

Long story short: if you like Comic Book movies, this one is a must-see.  Funny and fascinating in turns, and Robert Downy Jr is at his best.  A great action film without being too horribly preachy.

And now for the spoilery bits.
Spoilers behind the cut, and potentially in comments )

All in all, I loved it.  Will definitely be buying this one. :D

ETA: Don't leave until the credits are over!

Very late Fannish 5

But I have an excuse!  I just got back from vacation! :D

Name five songs (or whole playlists, if you want to get ambitious) that you associate with particular fictional characters.

So...I was listening to my player at work while I made this list, and some are better than others, and some charries have more than others, obviously...

1. I Can't Decide by Scissor Sisters "I can't decide/whether you should live or die/Oh, you'll probably go to heaven/Please don't hang your head and cry/No wonder why/My heart feels dead inside/Its cold and hard and petrified..."
2. Sympathy for the Devil by GnR or by the Rolling Stones "Please allow me to introduce myself/I'm a man of wealth and taste/I've been around for a long, long year/Stole many a man's soul and faith."

1. Solitaire by the Carpenters (though if you can find the If I Were a Carpenter version, I like that one much better...) "There was a man, a lonely man/Who lost his love through his indifference/A heart that cared, that went unshared/Until it died in his silence"
2. This Boy by the Beatles "That boy/Took my love away/He'll regret it someday...."

1. Tears of the Dragon by Bruce Dickinson "Where I was, I had wings that couldnt fly/Where I was, I had tears I couldnt cry/My emotions frozen in an icy lake/I couldnt feel them until the ice began to break"
2. Bring Me To Life by Evanescence " How can you see into my eyes,/Like open doors?/Leading you down into my core,/Where I've become so numb./Without a soul."
3. Going Under by Evanescence "Don't want your hand this time/I'll save myself"

1. Down by Suede (no video, sorry) "Theres a sadness in your eyes, theres a blankness in your smile,"
2. Fear by Sarah McLachlan "But I fear/I have nothing to give/I have so much to lose/Here in this lonely place/Tangled up in our embrace/Theres nothing Id like/Better than to fall/But I fear I have nothing to give"

1. Good Old Fashioned Lover Boy by Queen "Ooh love ooh lover boy/Whatre you doing tonight hey boy?/Everythings all right just hold on tight/Thats because Im a good old fashioned lover boy"
2, They by Jem " Who made up all the rules/We follow them like fools/Believe them to be true/Don't care to think them through"
3. Under the Scottsman's Kilt - this one's not so much a song that *is* Sirius, but one that I think he would have loved to death.  No lyrics on this one because of it, but feel free to look it up if you'd like.

That enough? :D

State of the elf

Let's see...probably one more story to come this year, so I'll wait to do the Fic year in review.  Probably Tuesday while I watch all of the Lord of the Rings for the New Year.

No other takers for my Music poll?  I know it might seem a bit daunting, but really, just go with your gut instinct.  The more choices we have later, the better. :)

Commenting.  Link to [info]kabal42's post yesterday, and to mine from several months back.  I think it's time to get that meme going again, and I think I also want to post a new New Year's meme, though of a different sort than last year.  I only hope it's as successful as that one was.

[info]founders_legacy officially starts Tuesday.  Daunting, but exciting.  Starting with a bang, too...  The Halloween feast in Harry's Fourth Year. :D  Should be fun.

As for Ms doesn't know when to stop, Yes, I saw the new stuff about the next gen.  I'm actually of two minds about it, as I am with all the stuff in DH, really.  I always know when i've gone fannish nuts because I start writing lists.  I have a program, Family Tree Maker, and couldn't resist putting them all into a slightly more visual format.  So, here for download is all the major families that have more than two members that are connected easily.  If people have the program, I'd also be willing to upload the base file.  This one is in PDF format so that anyone with Acrobat can read it.  Any additions (canon only, please) are more than welcome.  :)

Christmas went better than expected.  And the last of everything has been done now, so all that's left is my grandmother's birthday tonight (THAT side of the family, unfortunately...) and New Years, which should be nice and quiet. :)  Hubby bought me a DS, so I've been playing with that a lot.  I'm quite enjoying that. :D  Particularly a game called "My Word Coach," which apparently also has French and Spanish versions.  If they ever do a Welsh one, I'm so there... :D

Still have some writing to do, of course.  Bonking Tonks is due the 9th, and I haven't started on that or my D_D for next month.  Still, I have ideas, so hopefully I should be able to do them this week...

Oh, yes.  And I am now permanently Insane. :D  Got my permanent account yesterday or the day before...can't recall for sure.  But it feels nice.  :)  Even with the issues here, I have confidence that this will be a much more comfortable long-term home for my fandom life.

Music poll pt 1

So...I've been thinking about music and the songs we tend to label as decade-defining songs.  And it's easy to pick out what I think are, but the truth is, there are so many sub-groups, it's hard to know what really does.  So I had an idea.  Why not see what my flist thought?

So, I have a poll in two parts.  I will close this probably on the fourth, and post a follow-up poll using the entries I get for this one.  Feel free to link people to this.  The more, the merrier.

Some guidelines:
  • The song needs to have been on the charts for the decade it's being nominated for for at least one week.  Doesn't have to have been at the top of the charts, but it needs to have an actual presence in the decade.
  • Needs to make a statement about that decade (IE, Smells Like Teen Spirit, War, etc.).  You don't need to justify them to me, but these shouldn't be bublegum pop, either.
  • Stands the test of time--a sound-byte into that decade.
Oh...and if you can't think of a song for a decade, you don't have to put it in.  I just wanted to be all-inclusive. :)

If anyone wants a site for reference, I found this one to have a great list: The Vinyl Surrender Decade Music Chart Selector.

Also, please include both song and artist when you post.

Have at it! :D

Last Drabble for all my Sirii:
This is inspired by an idea I had talking to one of my RP crowd last night, and I realized I had to write it.  Sirius humming a Gaelic drinking song while sitting in McGonagall's class.  I don't actually reference the song in any way, but this is the song I see him humming.
You Tube Video - Under the Scotsman’s Kilt
319 words – G (PG13 for strong sexual connotation in the actual song)

Top 25 Musicals

So, went to watch Rocky Horror Picture show and Mummy with a friend tonight for a post-Halloween movie set, and we were making a list of more movies to watch together and came across the AFI site, and specifically their Top 25 Musicals list, which we both felt was highly off-kilter, so we made our own.  Feel free to agree or disgaree, though I want reasons, and not, "I like __ better"

For us, it was the songs people just know from the movie, and how well-known each song was that made the difference, with the movies being ranked in order from most songs to least.  The only major difference of opinion we had was on Hello Dolly and Snow White.  Which is why they're tied.  We started with a list of over 60 musicals that we both knew of, then narrowed it down from there.  The top ten movies were ones we both agreed need to be in the list, 11 was the leftover, and the others were ones each of us thought should be on there, though the other didn't necessarily.

The Musicals, and the songs we thought were big from each show. )
