Resource Post: Astrology

I'm an astrology nut.  Have been for longer than I can remember.  It's fun and harmless, and there's always lots of great ways to use it.

The past few years, I've used it as a way to help me determine birthdates for characters that don't have them when I need them.  Helps me come up with random personality traits I might not have otherwise thought of, and narrows down the date so I don't choose one at random.

Whether or not you actually believe in astrology, it's still fun to play around in, so I thought I'd write up a post of good sites to look at for various astrological/birth sign information.

Keep in mind, these sites have a tendency to disappear at random, so the links here are quite likely to just stop working.  If they do, let me know, and I'll try to find a better link, if one exists.

The Birthday Calculator: Not so much astrology, though it includes it, but random miscellanea about your date of birth.  Lots of random odd stuff here, but kind of fun to look through, and might inspire something you hadn't considered.

Fandom 30 Day Meme part 2

2 – Name the fandoms you've written in, and how much you've written in that fandom, and if you still write in it.

My first fanfic I can remember writing (I might have written Star Trek or Star Wars stuff before it, but I don't remember anything specific) was in Elfquest. Chock full of OCs that broke pretty much every rule there is for Mary Sues. Thank god none of it ever made it online.

Then in college, I did a piece on the Dollenganger Saga by VC Andrews, but just one poem, and not so much fanfic.

As I said yesterday, my first published piece was with [info]foodie in Voyager fandom.

We moved on to LotR, but I don't think I ever finished the fanfic I was writing, though she posted several about the Hobbits that I helped with.

And then I moved into HP, and never looked back. I couldn't even begin to tell you how many stories I've written in HP any longer. I've been writing HP stories for about 7 years now, if I'm counting right. HP is also my first slash fandom.

Since writing in HP, I've done a few drabbles in older fandoms--Buffy and Firefly, a bit more in Trek and Elfquest.

And then Someone introduced me to Youkko Nitta... I haven't written enough there, but I do love playing with those two characters...I need to write more. :D

And of course, Merlin, my newest love, which will be the subject of my NaNoWriMo this year. :D I've done maybe a dozen or so drabbles, and a couple of fics in the fandom, but I promise there will be more.

And I think that's the lot...though I'd probably be terrified by what I could unearth on my hard drive...

Nearly forgot to do my movie-meme, despite [info]foodie reminding me about it.

08 - A movie that you’ve seen countless times

No heavy thinking today.  This one has to be Star Wars.  There are others I've seen dozens of times, but none that have affected me quite so deeply, despite witty banter or over-tight breeches.  Han, Luke, Leia and co will probably always have a solid place in my heart.

State of the Elf

Been forever since I used that header, so I figured it was more than about time...

Need to do an update of my 100 in 1001 days list.  It's been just over a year, and I've managed some things, and failed at others.  Also thinking of doing a detailed list of the new movies I watched in the last year...  Also had thoughts about doing mini-game reviews and/or more Seattle entries, too, if there's any interest for either?  What do folks think?

Writing--Haven't been doing enough, but I have some fun ideas, including another HP memory loss fic, and the Merlin/Arthur Sword in the Stone fic, now complete with Season 2 spoilers, I think.  I also need to start editing my Nano Story...It's going to require a major rewrite, but I am looking forward to that now that I have enough paper to print it all out.  More than 80 pages worth, even squashed a bit.  And I have been keeping up with my D_Ds, and I have an idea chosen for my D_D for next month.  Should be fun to see what people come up with.  It's going to be a great anniversary.

Merlin news--Season three has been approved in the UK, so I'm looking forward to that, and Sy Fy has picked up the series, starting with Season 1.  So now most folks should be able to catch it, if they haven't already.  Wondering if NBC will be picking up season 2 this summer or not.

I've also been watching more British TV.  Demons, which is...okay, but not great.  And Law and Order: UK, which I'm already quite addicted to.  I've watched about 75-80% of the total American shows, if you include them all.  I doubt I've missed more than a small handful of the original series itself.  It's made watching the UK show quite interesting.  I love Jamie Bamber and Freema Agyeman in it, and I'm enjoying the other actors as well.  I will say I had a bit of trouble getting used to the idea of CPS meaning something other than Child Protective Services, but I love seeing the differences between the American and the British System of Justice.

Been spending too much time on my FB playing games, still playing a number of households in Sims 2, and I also got myself a couple of new games last week. King's Bounty: the Legacy, which is based on the original game that became Heroes of Might and Magic, which is okay, but a bit sluggish; and Style Savvy, which is incredibly addicting, and I have played every night since I got it. :) I highly recommend it if you like fashion games.  I have also had vague thoughts that it might be fun to play a Star Wars Universe RPG, but I don't like online RPG, so I'm not sure that there's anything that will appeal.  I don't suppose anyone out there has played any?

Also did a major upgrade of my living room.  Our movies were getting harder and harder to find because we have so many DVDs, so I resorted them, and we added a bookshelf from my sister for Christmas which I've turned into my reference library.  Took a bit of rearranging to get it close to my desk, but I like the way things turned out.  I feel at least a little bit more in control.  Able to find things that were scattered all over the place before.  It's nice.

So how is everyone else out there?

Thoughts contingent on Star Wars

I know. *gasp*! It's not a HP post. I've been a fan of Star Wars since the beginning, but I have to admit that the prequels just don't do it for me. There are bits and pieces that I find intriguing, and I don't hate it as much as others, but I don't think they're as well-thought-out or well written as the original trilogy.

And lately, hubby and I have been reading an online strip called "Darths and Droids" that's based on the same idea as DM of the Rings. Apparently he has plans to do all the movies eventually. But right now, they're in Anakin and Shmee's home, talking about pod racing. And let me tell you, some of the reasoning the strip artist has thought up for why certain things happened in the movie makes *far* more sense. And last night, hubby mentioned something about a world without Star Wars. Because in the world of the players in this strip, they've never seen or heard of the movie series.

So, imagine, if you will...a world without Star Wars. So much of the Sci-fi that has come since, especially in movie form, has had its roots in that movie. Sure, there would still be sci-fi, but I think it would be of a generally much darker tone. Movies like Terminator and Alien would have been the biggest sci-fi of the decade, maybe sharing screen time with Star Trek, though one wonders whether that would have hit it quite so large without Star Wars to compete with.

Perhaps the female Heroes of Terminator and Alien would have brought about the rise of the female hero, without Luke and Han, and likely Indy to go up against. Perhaps the Enterprise D, when Next Generation finally debuted would have had a female captain for Riker to flirt with.

I can’t see Firefly getting made, because I think it owes more to Star Wars than Star Trek, and if it was, it would have been a very different product. After all, without the rogue Han Solo to make us love anti-heroes, how could we possibly love a bitter man like Malcom Reynolds?

So...what movies do you think would still have been made, and which ones do you think would have been changed, or never been made at all? And why?

That Icon Meme again

Did this in October, but I added a bunch

Make a list of all the characters in your icons. (Although you may have more than one icon of a single character, they only go on the list once.) Alphabetize it. Take the first two people on the list; that's your first pairing. Second two people; second pairing. Etc. Then write your reaction to each pairing (or a snippet of a hypothetical fic featuring each pairing).

Decided to go with snippets this time. And I didn't include real people in this list. Just the people I use in RP as the charcter I use them for.

micro-ficlets behind the cut, with lots of HP, a bit of QAF, Firefly, Stargate, Beatles, and many others included, some mention of character death )

Well, all but one guessed.  I just put the person who guessed it right first.

A meme, gacked from [info]fiona_fawkes who stole it from [info]furiosity who stole it from [info]kerrikins:

What fandoms do we have in common?

My main fandom is Harry Potter, of course.  Books, movies, fandom...  I love it all (though GOF the movie less so...)  Just too much there I adore.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer and a bit less so, Angel.  Joss whedon is my god.  I adore him, his one-liners, his characters, and the way he makes his worlds so real.

Sims - and yes, it is a fandom.  I could spend hours or even days creating houses, characters...  I love them.  I love playing them.

Star Trek.  Not active currently, but the only other fandom I really published stories in.  I can't imagine a world where there wasn't Star Trek in my life.  Even with the mistakes TPTB made, there's still so much good there.

Elfquest.  The only other fandom I got involved in on a personal level, though I wasn't in any holts.  I have always loved elves, so really, this was right up my alley.

Firefly.  See Buffy/Angel above.  And may I add, he makes the best female characters ever.

Star Wars.  Really the first trilogy, cause the prequels were bad.  Lucas had a great group of actors, the story had heart, and the entire thing advanced movie effects tenfold.

Stargate.  Love the idea, love the characters, love the stories.  Just a great team all around.  And anything that includes this much myth is right up my alley.

Forever Knight.  Best-ever vampire show on TV before Buffy.  It sucks that it only made it through three seasons.

Fruits Basket.  People who turn into animals?  And boys who can't touch girls?  How can I not love it?

Other minor fandoms: LOTR, B5 (Ivanova, Talia and Marcus...  God, yes.), XMen, V (the mini series), Batman. Teen Titans, Star Blasers/Space Battleship Yamato, Oran High School Host Club (omg, twins!), Battlestar Galactica, Quantum Leap, Law & Order, Labyrinth, Beauty and the Beast, Lost, Shakespeare

Yeah.  Just a few.  :P  And likely there's more I've forgotten.

So, who do you like?

Another meme, yes...sorry about that...

Gacked from [info]ponderosa121 -
The OTP meme.

I list my fandoms, and you guess what my OTPs are in them.  In some cases, I do have more than one, but I will indicate.  And--for added incentive, I will write drabbles for those who guess one right.

This week's <lj comm

Name five fannish characters you would trade lives with.

In thinking of who I would list, I come up with two thoughts.  One is that this can't be a favorite character thing necessarily, because most if not all of my favorite characters are heavily angsty.  Draco will have a bad end; ditto Severus, plus his unhappy life; and look at Remus, Willow and Jadzia...  I'm just drawn to angst.  The other is that when I do narrow it down, they all seem to generally end up being the same character type: a strong, confident woman.  Jadzia, B'Elanna, Janeway, Zoe...  All generally the same character.  So, those two codacils in mind, here goes nothing...

  1. Jadzia Dax (DS9) - Strong, confident, intelligent...  I would give anything to have the amount of confidence she had in her pinky finger.
  2. Zoe Warren (Firefly) - Again, strong and confident, and never without a smile.
  3. B'Elanna Torres (Voyager) - The attitude, the intelligence.  I loved her from the first episode.
  4. Nightfall (Elfquest) - Here's one of the few who actually gets to live the happily-ever-after most heroes don't.  And boy does she deserve it.
  5. Leia Organa (Star Wars) - Got everything her mother didn't.  Maybe Bail made the difference?
Some Not-quites -

Willow Rosenberg (BTVS) - Adored her greatly, but her breakdown in season six was just too much to handle.  And Tara's death...
Draco Malfoy (HP) - Could have everything in the palm of his hand, but didn't realize what he'd need to do to get it all, so now he may end up being a casualty of the war his father has helped create.
Remus Lupin (HP) - We all know that Remus will never have a happy life, unless JK decides to do the "killing the werewolf who made him breaks the curse" rule...
Padme Amidala (Star Wars) - I loved her in the first movie, was rather dissapointed with her in the second, and was thouroughly disgusted in the third.  She had so much potential.  But apparently being a leader that young means that you don't have to worry about thinking after you step down...

To all the HP fans out there

Spoiler-safe [info]iharthdarth today.  Go check it out. *wibble*

Jul. 1st, 2005

<lj comm

1. What movies are you fannish about?
Too many to count, but I'll list a bunch anyway.
  • Star Wars saga (mostly the original trilogy)
  • Indiana Jones series
  • Terminator
  • Pirates of the Caribbean
  • Moulin Rouge
  • Matrix (the first more than the later two
  • Stargate
I think you get the idea... ;)

2. What upcoming movies do you expect to be fannish about?
  • Serenity
  • Corpse Bride
  • Goblet of Fire
  • King Kong
I'll be seeing others, but those are the ones I'm most excited about.

3. Movie adaptations of your fannish tv shows: good idea or bad idea?
Depends on who's doing the adaptation.  If it's the originals, or those who care deeply for the original, good, if it's studio-run, bad.

4. If they have to make a movie of a fannish tv show, do you want the original actors and premise, or is an updated premise acceptable?
Depends on the show.  Older shows should be an updated premise in general, with cameos of originals if possible.  New shows should have some or all of the original cast members, because if they don't want to do it, that's nto a good sign.

5. Would you rather have a made for tv fannish movie or do you want the big screen?
Depends on the source material.  And who's making it. And the budget.

You must see this side of the Force....

What if John Hughes had directed Star Wars?

May. 21st, 2005

Review time...

Well, after thirty years, it's over.  Should I feel ashamed to say I'm glad?  What is it about the big fandoms where when they get big enough, the creaters just stop caring, and they should just leave it to the fans?

Okay, so Episode 3 didn't suck as much as 1 or 2.  But it was in no way as good as Empire.  Just not.  Sorry.

Cut for spoiler-ish ranting... )

Anyway, ultimate feeling on this?  I won't be seeing it again in the theatre, but I needed to see it there.  Just once.  Maybe I'll get lucky, and it'll age well.  Hah!

So, what did you all think?  Did you go?  Did you like it?  Hate it?  I must know.

May. 20th, 2005

To whom it may concern...

Stay tuned for chapter 6 and Epilogue of Finding Silver tomorrow.  And my opinion of ROTS...  Still digesting.  But I must say this: "I knew Empire, sir.  And you are no Empire..."
