A (very late) 2009 Movies summary

I've been keeping track of all the movies I watch, though a small handful might have slipped through the cracks in the past year.  It's been interesting and informative, and it's a nice resource to have.  If you're curious to see the full list, it's here at Listal.  I've started a new one for 2010, so we'll see how long I can keep this up.

No, I'm not about to go over every movie I watched last year.  Just summarize some of the best of the new movies I saw.  Though feel free to ask about the others on the list if you're interested.

Overall, I watched 42 new movies last year.  Stuff I'd missed in the theatres or avoided there, stuff that I've never got around to seeing until now, and 9 new movies in the theatres as well.

The full new-movie list for those who are interested )

The ten I recommend most are:
Movies and mini-reviews under the cut )

And this year, more new movies.  I've seen Holmes and Percy Jackson (loved the first, the latter not so much).  And lots more to come.  Alice (spooky looking), Iron Man 2 (I hope it's as good as the first), Robin Hood (can't help but be curious, and I like Crowe), Airbender (I go back and forth on that one, but again, I'm curious), Inception (looks really wild, but could be a disaster...), Rapunzel (More Disney, whee!), Deathly Hallows (as my stomach clenches in dread for how much worse they can make it...), and Dawn Treader (My favorite of the book series).  Plus trying to catch up on movies I've missed in the last two years...so many movies, so little time. :)

Movie Review: Half Blood Prince

So...I've seen it twice now.  The first time I was so overwhelmed by emotion that I had trouble sorting out my thoughts.  This is my second favorite of the books for several reasons.  Among them the fact that this is basically Draco and Snape's story.   Even as much as it is Harry's and Tom's.  The book itself is flawed, but there are many points in the story that I can't help but love, despite the ridiculous teenage drama.

The movie is far less so.  Obviously, it can't follow the book exactly.  That would have taken three movies worth.  But there were some distinct disappointments when it came to things left out, or reactions in general.

Overall, worth a viewing, but I wouldn't expect it to be the best of the series if you have yet to see it.

Here be the spoilers )

Those were my major reactions, though I'm sure I've forgotten something here or there, but I'd say I've rambled on far long enough.  Overall, not bad.  Just not great like I know it could have been.

Good bye, job

So, as of 5 PM yesterday, I am now officially unemployed.  My own doing, and I'm glad I did it.  I know it was the right choice.  I loved the people there, but the job was only getting more and more stressful.

I spent a lot of time yesterday saying good bye to everyone.  Got lots of hugs and lots of presents, and plenty of joking "how dare you"s from folks.  The thing is?  I wasn't there that long.  I started back in July of 07, but it took me until February of 08 (with a few-months-break in between there) to become an official employee.  But I've made more friends there than I ever have any place else I've ever worked.  I'll miss seeing them every day, and talking to them.  It made the day quite bittersweet.

Ended up having a plant, a balloon, and three bags to take home (one my usual bag I carry with me every day, but still...).  Luckily I'd made plans with [info]turtle_avenger last night, so she picked me up, and we went to Red Robin's for supper, then went to see a girlyflick, "The Ugly Truth." :D  I spent a lot of time covering my face in embarrassment for the characters, but it was fun and light and a perfect way to end the day.

Now I just have to remind myself to do my own work every day.  I have a number of long-neglected chores to get to, and two big fics to write, not to mention the usual D_Ds and plotting for my Nano this year...Maybe even a Merlin fic or two.  So I will still be busy, but easier to get to--I think. :)  I'm going to force myself to get out of the house at least every other day, just for my own health, because I tend to be disinclined to move, which is very not good for me... :P

Bought myself a new pasta maker--for cooking in the microwave.  Haven't tested it yet, but here's hoping.  Helps that I'll only be making it for myself.  Means that there won't be a lot of boilover to deal with. Wish me luck!

Also--saw HBP a week ago Friday.  Still getting my thoughts together about it.  I'll be seeing it again Monday, so I'll probably post a proper review then. :)

State of the Elf

Let's see...health thing sorta better.

Writing getting done.  Still have two more to finish this month, then I have a thought for a epilogue-kid mini-drabble fest...

Have signed back up at NaNoWriMo's website, and have been looking around there.  My plot for my fic I'll be writing is coming along nicely...

Fall TV opinions )

Tons of movies coming out this fall.  Starting with Across the Universe today...  The previews look so pretty...I can't wait to see it.
Others I'm looking forward to:
Elizabeth the Golden Age (still not 100% sold on this one, but I did love the first, even with the playing with history...) - October 12th
August Rush - November 21st
The Golden Compass - December 7th
Sweeny Todd (has everyone seen the preview, yet?) - December 21st

And, of course, a few videos as well... :D  I've been putting off watching the Pirates movies until I can watch all three at once... :D

Um...that's all I can think of for now, anyway...how is everyone else doing?

Review: Order of the Phoenix

Overall?  Seen it twice, now, and I do love it.  It’s not my favorite movie, though it might be above COS on the list.  Which I guess makes it my second-favorite of the series… :D  I’m not sure if it’s because I liked this book better than GOF, or if it’s in the direction, or what, but I definitely enjoyed it more.

The thing that really did it for me was the fact that this one actually felt like it belonged with the first three, unlike Goblet, which was too different from the others.  Even with the darkness of the film, it just worked.  I loved so much more about it than I was able to with Goblet.  It might be that I just didn’t like that story, and this one is much more in my interest-zone HP-wise.

Spoilers behind the cut )

All in all?  This movie has left me with a lot of need to go and write my own personal canon for like, my top ten characters, or something, because I know some of it is me reading into the text, and some is just straight from my own wishes for them, but I’ve never wanted to do so more than now.  Like Snape—that nickname—you know it came from Sirius and/or James calling him that on the first ride to Hogwarts because he was crying about being away from his mother for the first time, right?  Or how Black Manor (Grimmauld Place) was there before the Muggles were?  Yeah, okay…  Maybe once I’ve done Drusilla’s bday fic.

All in all?  Good movie.  I do recommend it.  More than GOF.

Little update

Woke up yesterday morning to no internet, which made me a very fussy Elf, but things are better--turned out to be the router, so we're good for now.  And I didn't spend all day fighting it because I was off working with my Sarah. :)  So I had some net access, even if I didn't get to check my flist until 11:30...

Saw the movie.  Won't spoil here.  Going to go see it again on Saturday with a friend and her sister and mum.  Should be interesting.  I'll wait until then to do my review, though I already have three pages of notes... :P

Writing is proceeding apace.  D_D for tomorrow is nearly done but for the editing, and I'm nearly at the smut in my Farewell FQF piece...  I can do this!

State of the Elf

Someone please remind the bunnies that I have too much to do as is, and that I do NOT need another fest, and that I DON'T write het?  *clobbers the Lucius/Tonks bunny that jumped on me the moment I read Violet's post at [info]erotic_elves*

Nerves going utterly insane.  This month is going to go so fast....
11 - Oder of the Phoenix released
13 - D_D regular post date.
15 - D_D Farewell fic due
21 - Deathly Hallows released
22 - Elf's brain goes splewy.
Not to mention all the threads going on at each game this month.  At least AD is fairly calm.  First month back at school, so I don't have to do TOO much...  But I have a huge birthday, and Christmas... *sighs*

Have been playing (too much) over at Kongregate.  Anyone else have an account there?  Some of those games are seriously addictive.

I've also been thinking of new ways to do my recs.  Still do the Sunday ones, but maybe only once a month...  But maybe themed groups, or something.  I think the pairing recs have gone by the wayside.

And apparently people really want to know what I think of Labyrinth. :D

Todays <lj comm

1. Which character do you actually prefer the movie version of?
This one should be no surprise to anyone on my flist that I've actually talked to--Lucius. Jason is Lucius. I don't know how JK pictured him, but he took that role and he made it.
Though I should also say that Shirley absolutely made me love Myrtle. In the books she's an utter annoyance, and Shirley puts such life in her...
2. Which character do you usually love, but dislike his or her movie portrayal?
Dumbledore. I loved Harris. He and Rickman were the reasons I went to SS in the first place. I'd not even thought of reading the books before then. But Gambon...I can't even watch that scene in GOF, it pisses me off so much. I don't know if it was him, or the director, but either way, it's made me hate his Dumbledore. How hard is it to play that calmly? I mean, really?
3. What is your favorite moment/line/etc. added to the movies that doesn't show up in the books?
The snake. Well, okay, not the snake itself, because that is in the books, but the moment when Dud realizes he's trapped behind the glass. If anyone deserves to be an exhibit in the zoo, it's him.
4. In a perfect world, ________ would play _________.
In a perfect world, Richard Harris would still be alive and playing Dumbledore.
5. What is your overall opinion of the movies?
I think the problems are increasing with each film. I knew they would. And POA gives a hint of it, even though I like it.  They dropped too much of the Marauders' story, and it's too integrated into what happens in the story to have dropped that much.  It bugs me.  And GOF...  I think there are maybe two or three scenes that I enjoyed, and a few more moments besides.  Otherwise?  It sucked.  Doesn't leave me with a great deal of hope for OOTP.

PSA: Spoilers...again

Said it before, I'll say it again.  I don't like spoilers.  Even very minor ones.  Yes, this includes cover art, which is more speculation than spoiler, but still...

Please, please, PLEASE...if you want to squee, speculate, or whatever, please post under a cut for those of us who aren't ready yet?  It's just simple courtesy.

And this goes for the movie, too.

Thank you.

OTP meme

1. Take your OTP
2. List your personal canon for those characters. So the stuff that has nothing whatsoever to do with the books, but in your head is irrefutably what would have happened

My OTP - Harry/Draco )
Yeah, I don't have as many links as others I've seen, but it'll do.  I could probably add more, but I have to leave in a half hour and can't think of anything else...

Spoilers

Okay, I know I must be in the minority here, but there has to be somone out there who feels, as I do, that the books and the movies are not the same things.  Therefore, all spoilers for the movies should be behind cuts, and have spoiler warnings.  Why the heck is that so hard for some people to get?

Yes, I want to see the movie.  Yes, I have hopes for the movie.  Yes, I'm glad they've finally released pictures of Draco.  But I do not want to see it, okay?  And if I do want to see it, I can go find it myself.  God!  And wtf!?  Posting in a community without a cut...aaaagh.

Unlike the first three movies, where I was just excited about the movie going in, I have some serious doubts aobut this movie.  And I know that it's only a matter of time before I won't be able to avoid the trailer any more.  In fact, I may end up seeing it this weekend...  I hope not, but some things are beyond my control.  I'm rather certain, though, that the trailer will only increase my doubts about this movie, and I want the magic to last just a little longer, thanks.  So I would be highly appreciative if people would be a bit more considerate out there in lj-land....
</rant>

(this isn't directed at anyone on my friends list, but rather at an idiot in a harry/draco comm--I know, I know, what do I expect...--who decided to post a clip of Draco dancing at the ball.  Without a cut.)

1. What movies are you fannish about?
Too many to count, but I'll list a bunch anyway.
  • Star Wars saga (mostly the original trilogy)
  • Indiana Jones series
  • Terminator
  • Pirates of the Caribbean
  • Moulin Rouge
  • Matrix (the first more than the later two
  • Stargate
I think you get the idea... ;)

2. What upcoming movies do you expect to be fannish about?
  • Serenity
  • Corpse Bride
  • Goblet of Fire
  • King Kong
I'll be seeing others, but those are the ones I'm most excited about.

3. Movie adaptations of your fannish tv shows: good idea or bad idea?
Depends on who's doing the adaptation.  If it's the originals, or those who care deeply for the original, good, if it's studio-run, bad.

4. If they have to make a movie of a fannish tv show, do you want the original actors and premise, or is an updated premise acceptable?
Depends on the show.  Older shows should be an updated premise in general, with cameos of originals if possible.  New shows should have some or all of the original cast members, because if they don't want to do it, that's nto a good sign.

5. Would you rather have a made for tv fannish movie or do you want the big screen?
Depends on the source material.  And who's making it. And the budget.

Birthday greetings!

Happy Birthday, Alan Rickman.

It's because of him and Richard Harris that I ever got into Harry Potter at all.  If they hadn't been cast for the movies, I would never have gone to see them.  He is not how I picture Snape, but he does a damn fine job of it.  The movies would be far less interesting to me if he weren't in them.  And if they rob him of the hospital-wing scene between him and Sirius, I will scream bloody murder!
