LJ vs IJ -
Last but not least--LJ's new stance on non-photographic pictures of underaged people.  Yeah, whatever.  I've been through too much this year.  I'm here, and I'm staying.  As far as I noticed, there was never an apology to anyone who was hurt, they were made out to be criminals for posting pictures, and frankly?  I'm thinking of dumping all of LJ, really.  Every time I read my flist there, I just get more angry.  I'm tired and worn from the battles I've gone through in the last year, and I'm not going back.

Character generation poll results

So...a week is plenty long enough.

I'll make two lists here.  One with the Character and any "generations" they got that recieved over 30% of the votes, and one listing the characters with their most prominent generation from the votes.

By Character:

By Generation: (starred means they appear in more than one generation because the votes for them were tied)

So...a second bit of sort-of-meta...

I remember when I first began to read HP, and I couldn't help wondering if she was going to destroy the school by the end of the series.  I remember it seemed like Harry was gathering what might become a new set of founders around him--including Draco.  I never could quite decide on the "four" who would become the new founders, though, aside from Harry and Draco.

Now that the series is over, I find myself thinking about this idea once more.  I don't see this as a "one from each house" sort of thing, but rather a better mix of personalities than the original founders.

And now I'm thinking they'd need to redo the whole house system.  Maybe have students resorted each year, or every other year, or something.  Yes, I know that the idea is to give the kids stability, but it seemed as though that stability lead to stagnation.  So you'd have to find a way to fix that somehow.  Another possibility I've been thinking of is to maybe make all the seventh-years have a different common room than the rest of the school.  So that they're in a house for six years, then share another their last year.  Keeps the younger students out of their hair while they study for NEWTs, and encourages inter-house relationships.

So...what do you think?  Who would you make "new founders" if the school had been destroyed?  And how would you "fix" the inherent issues with the house system?

An explanation:
[info]ceria and I were discussing the ages of the older lesser characters in HP.  In this case, it was a fic that would have taken place while Arthur and Molly were in school.  But we were trying to decide who would be there with them, and at what ages.  She encouraged me to do a poll, which I love to do anyway, so it didn't take much.

So I made a list today to keep myself from going mad, of 50 character where the birth dates aren't too exact.  Your role, if you should choose to accept it, is to decide where you think that character falls.  And, for added effect, if you have other characters you'd like to see done, please leave a comment with their names at the bottom.  If I get more than five, I'll make another poll.

Also, if you choose "other" for a character, comments would be lovely. :)

Forgive if there are any flaws...I'm a bit tired at the moment.  Long week.  I'm so glad there's only one day more...  Am allowing a bit of leeway here, just for the sake of completeness...

House Poll Results

So...been a week.  I think everyone who wanted to, voted.

Numbers under the cut )

So...with top pics, that leaves 8 or 9 in Gryffindor (depending on where Rose is sorted), 5 or 6 in Ravenclaw (again, depending on Rose), and two in Slytherin, with none of the kids having been chosen as Hufflepuffs...

Still, could be a worse mix, I suppose.  Especially considering most of them are Weasleys...

Hm...this is making me want a Snupin where Teddy gets sorted into Slytherin.  :D  Can't you just see Snape's reaction?

Polls! (repost - please vote again?)

Cause, you know...I have nothing better to do today...

Poll #1: is anyone else interested in suggestions for the music poll here?

Poll #2: So, everyone remembers this Next-gen kid house poll, right?  I've decided, with all the new kids she gave us, that we need a new one! :D  So...!
Wow...so many kids that I had to make two polls.  I put notes on the new ones to show whose kids they are, and I left off middle names.  Still, people should recognize them by now, right?

Polls behind the cut! )

Sorry to those who were trying to vote when I deleted...It swallowed James on me.  I swear, he was in there.  It was cause I was futzing with it to try and get them all in there.

State of the elf

Let's see...probably one more story to come this year, so I'll wait to do the Fic year in review.  Probably Tuesday while I watch all of the Lord of the Rings for the New Year.

No other takers for my Music poll?  I know it might seem a bit daunting, but really, just go with your gut instinct.  The more choices we have later, the better. :)

Commenting.  Link to [info]kabal42's post yesterday, and to mine from several months back.  I think it's time to get that meme going again, and I think I also want to post a new New Year's meme, though of a different sort than last year.  I only hope it's as successful as that one was.

[info]founders_legacy officially starts Tuesday.  Daunting, but exciting.  Starting with a bang, too...  The Halloween feast in Harry's Fourth Year. :D  Should be fun.

As for Ms doesn't know when to stop, Yes, I saw the new stuff about the next gen.  I'm actually of two minds about it, as I am with all the stuff in DH, really.  I always know when i've gone fannish nuts because I start writing lists.  I have a program, Family Tree Maker, and couldn't resist putting them all into a slightly more visual format.  So, here for download is all the major families that have more than two members that are connected easily.  If people have the program, I'd also be willing to upload the base file.  This one is in PDF format so that anyone with Acrobat can read it.  Any additions (canon only, please) are more than welcome.  :)

Christmas went better than expected.  And the last of everything has been done now, so all that's left is my grandmother's birthday tonight (THAT side of the family, unfortunately...) and New Years, which should be nice and quiet. :)  Hubby bought me a DS, so I've been playing with that a lot.  I'm quite enjoying that. :D  Particularly a game called "My Word Coach," which apparently also has French and Spanish versions.  If they ever do a Welsh one, I'm so there... :D

Still have some writing to do, of course.  Bonking Tonks is due the 9th, and I haven't started on that or my D_D for next month.  Still, I have ideas, so hopefully I should be able to do them this week...

Oh, yes.  And I am now permanently Insane. :D  Got my permanent account yesterday or the day before...can't recall for sure.  But it feels nice.  :)  Even with the issues here, I have confidence that this will be a much more comfortable long-term home for my fandom life.

Musings on Hogwarts houses

So...playing with Harry and Draco, and seeing their twin sons sorted into houses...  Draco's into Ravenclaw and Harry's into Slytherin.  It's just making me think more about what makes someone more disposed to one house or another.

We've got two bits in canon that most people look to for most sorting of non-canon characters, or characters that were otherwise never sorted--Dumbledore's comment about how people choose the house they're in, and the fact that all Weasleys, all Malfoys, and most of the Blacks were all sorted into the same houses...

But then we have families like the Patils, where twin girls were sorted into separate houses, so we know it can happen.  And most characters seem to show leanings to at least two houses.  So why is it that some people think if you're in a family, that means you're limited to one or two houses?  It seems a silly idea, and yet, everyone sorts all Weasleys and all Potters into Gryffindor, and all Malfoys and Blacks into Slytherin (aside from Sirius).  It just seems more of the fault in JK's view of the world...that she had four houses, and pretty much ignored two of them.

So how does one fix this issue, and am I really silly to think of a family where there are four or more children, and there's at least one child in each house?  It seems far more realistic to me than a family where absolutely every family member is in the same house.  I mean, granted, pressure would do a lot, but it wouldn't do everything.  Particularly in a family with seven children and so laid-back like the Weasleys.  Percy is the perfect example of someone who would have fit in far better in Ravenclaw, but was shoved into the Gryffindor box by JK because she wanted to give us his character more.

Not that people have to agree with me, but...I seem to be having one of those days when thoughts like that occur to me.  So...which way do you lean?  Multi-house families, or single-house?  And why?

Today's <lj comm

What five nitpicky things do you wish writers in your fandom(s) would get right?

Beware - what passes below is snarky and soapboxy, and not directed specifically at anyone on my flist.  Just gripes I've had over the years about various fanfics.
  1. Lucius Malfoy was at Hogwarts with the Marauders and co for 2 years.  That's it.  No more.  Granted, this one is fading, but every so often, I still come across fics where people have decided that it would be cooler if he was there longer.  Or just never checked the Lexicon.  I know it's fun to pair him with those boys, but there are other ways to do it.  And explaining it would give you a more interesting story.
  2. While I'm at it...any character in Hogwarts when they shouldn't be, or who is in a story as other than stated in the books - Seamus being a pureblood or Muggle-born, for instance.  Drives me up the walls.  Speculating when we don't have the facts is fine.  Hell, it's okay to fiddle with these things a little bit.  Just not too much.  Particularly when certain facts have been clearly stated in the books.
  3. Neville is not a squib.  Never has been.  Never will be.  A squib is someone who has no magical ability.  Neville has tons.  What he doesn't have is confidence.  For example: the first flight lesson.  Neville took off just fine.  What he couldn't do was control his broom.  That doesn't show a lack of power at all.  If anything, it shows an excess.  Please, before writing the character, read into his character a bit?  Thank you.
  4. Rich does not mean middle-class.  And a Manor isn't just a big house with extra bedrooms.  There are expectations there, both in manners (how to act around others and in large gatherings) and clothing (rich people, particularly wizarding rich, would not wear jeans...not without good reason), among other things.  If you're going to write about a wealthy family, please decide where on the scales they fall, and find out what that means.  This also follows that Purebloods would not have Muggle things in their homes generally.  Malfoys would have no clue about most Muggle gadgets, unless they had access to magiked ones.  Yes, there are exceptions to every rule, but if you're going to have exceptions, decide why and how, and show the reader why.
  5. Remus Lupin is not a wimp.  No man could survive on his own for 12 years who was.  Yes, he lets people push him around, but it's like Superman pulling his punches.  He's scared to let go.  He knows he could be deadly if he does.  He is quiet, yes.  And studious.  But none of that makes him a wimp.  If anything, it makes him stronger than the average Wizard.  As for the way he dealt with James and Sirius...how would you deal with stuff like that, if you were certain you'd lose the two best friends you ever had, who accepted you regardless?  Give him a little slack, please?
Just for good measure, if you don't already have it linked, please consult the Lexicon when you write.  It's a great resource.  Even Jo uses it.

A writer's snark

So, I tend to do okay when I post stories that feature my OTP, but I'm such a multi-shipper outside of that that when I write something else, I tend to have problems with finding people either to beta the stories or who are interested enough to read it.  Sometimes even finding a spot to post can be difficult.

Specifically, I adore Blaise, but I know that others don't particularly feel the same, and I'm wondering if some of the pieces I'm writing for [info]50_smutlets will even be read by anyone.  It's a disenhartening thought, and one that, at times, makes it difficult to write my smutlets at all.  I mean, I know there's call for Blaise/Hermione or Blaise/Draco, and that people are usually interested in most Harry, Snape or Lucius pairings.  Or Weasley or Marauder pairings, even.  But beyond that?  I just have to ask.  Is there anyone who will be interested in a Miles/Blaise?  What about Regulus/Blaise?  Oliver/Blaise?  Hell, Kingsley/Blaise, even...

I just feel the need, sometimes, to create a support-group for us Blaise fans.  But we're such a diverse group, would that really even help?  Some of us are Het only, or prefer Het, while others of us are the reverse.  Some are pairing specific, while others will read any story if he's in it at all.  Some of us only prefer female or white Blaise, while others get upset if he's anything other than canon.  Not something that's easy to reconcile.

Other times, I think that what we need is a newsletter like [info]lucius_recs or [info]hd_prophet.  But with so much going on for me at the moment, I know I'd never be on the ball enough to keep it up for very long.  I honestly wish I was one of those uber-organized people who had time to do even half of what I thought about.  I don't know that I'm asking for help here, but I do think ideas as to what to do, perhaps volunteers as far as putting together a newsletter for Blaise, would not be turned down.  Or am I the only one interested in an idea of this sort?

Bleh. [/snark]

And how are you all today?

Fannish thoughts

So, today on the bus, I was struck by the differences between Harry Potter and Star Trek fandoms.  Maybe it's just that I wasn't heavily into the fic side of ST, or any RP, but it seems to me that for ST, so many of the "ships" out there are fan-made, which means an original ship, not the Enterprise (or any of the other well-known ones), and all original characters.  While in HP, everything seems to relate back to Harry or Hogwarts, and if you don't use mostly canon characters, no one wants to read it.  And it made me remember my time in the ElfQuest fandom as well.  Most writing for EQ is written around orignal characters, often in original tribes.

So now I'm wondering.  What do you think makes the difference between the two types of fandom?  Do you think it's the size of the universe?  HP's Wizarding World being so small, or ST being so large?  Except in EQ, the number of Elves was fairly small as well, and Star Wars is a huge universe, and yet most people tend to play with the pre-made characters that I've noticed.  So what makes the difference?

I don't rant about this much, but this is something that I've always been picky about for myself, and seeing as someone else has put up a poll about it, I'd love to see what everyone else thinks.

And then tell me.  What do those terms mean to you?

State of the Elf

So, I haven't posted anything but fic in the last week or so, so I thought I'd post something to say hi to everyone, and yes, I'm still here, and working on fics to be posted (I have two more Xmas fics I want to finish, then I'll be going back to my "regular" writing...), and stuff like that

I came across something on [info]inell's LJ this morning.  She's come up with an idea that squicked her.  So, I'm curious.  What was the squickiest (to you, not necessarily to your readers) thing you ever finished?

For me, I have to say it was my Silver Cycle.  Dub con, incest(ish), chan (which I *never* write), and a semi-rent-boy-esquness.  I can't believe I even had the idea, let alone finished it.  I'm really quite proud of it, though.

So, come on.  I want to hear about yours.  Please?

Chattin' about OT3's

So, I had so much fun chating with everyone about their OTPs, I wanted to know if anyone else had an OT3--one true threesome.

I've always been drawn to Sirius/Severus/Remus.  I love all permutations of the triangle, and when they come together, it's just electric.

I do have others I search out, but none that ever approach my love for that threesome-- Sirius/Harry/Remus, or Severus/Harry/Draco, or Severus/Harry/Remus, or Harry/Draco/Ron seem to be my other favorites.

And while we're on the subject, does anyone have any idea if there's an archive just for threesome fics?  Cause when I'm in the mood, I can never seem to find any that I haven't already read.

Also, now that I've actually broken through the threesome barrier and written a couple of threesome drabbles, has anyone else written any, and if so, do you have a favorite of your own you'd like to rec?  Always on the lookout for good threesome smut. :D

OTPs

So, I just came to a realization this morning.  I used to have three OTPs of different sorts: there was my main OTP--Harry/Draco, which superceeds everything else.  There was my adult OTP--Severus/Sirius, which I love above any other adult Pairing.  And there was my Het OTP--Draco/Hermione, which I read more fics about than any other het couple.

But since HBP, Draco/Hermione has pretty much gone away.  I still like it, but it doesn't pull me like it used to.  Just doesn't work as well in the new canon.  Which isn't to say that I'll stop reading them, just that I can't get story ideas to work in my head for them any more.  I don't go searching them out, either.

But I do have a new OTP rising.  Even before HBP, I adored Severus/Draco, and with the ending of HBP, how could I not love them all the more?

HBP has turned me into a slasher more than ever before. ;D

So, what are everyone else's OTPs?

Snape - SAD?

So, I've been working on a story with a friend, and trying to explain to her how I see Snape's character, which was driving us both nuts, because the character we've got him pairing up in it is a very outgoing person, and I don't see Snape as being very accepting of that kind of thing. She couldn't understand why he would take such offence over certain things, or why he would react the way I was suggesting.

I finally realized that the reactions I keep thinking of him having are all Symptoms of Social Anxiety Disorder - Hating to be around people, particularly social situations, and a rather extreme reaction to changes in his schedule. I know I've seen him written with those and similar attitudes in other peoples' fics, but not specifically mentioned as such, and I can't recall ever seeing the idea discussed anywhere.

What does everyone out there think? Do you think he's got Social Anxiety? Or do just you think he's a misanthrope?
