Photospam: Mah Bichez

I've got a group of characters whom I adore that all fit into a certain mold but which still have a great deal of variation in between, and since female characters never get enough love, I felt the need to share them today, because seeing a photo of one of them just made me grin, almost manically.

I call them "mah bichez" affectionately, of course.  Every single one of them has a dark edge to them, and most are the "bad guys" in their universe, or at least one.

Bad Girls behind the cut )

Of course, those are just the ones who came to mind today, and definitely the ones at the top of my list.  Who would you add?

Fandom 30 Day Meme part 9

9 – Pairings – For each of the fandoms from day two, what are your three favorite pairings to write?

Elfquest - The only canon pairing I actually wrote was Skywise/Foxfur.  All the rest were OCs paired with one of the known characters.

Voyager - Janeway/Chakotay, Tom/B'Elanna, haven't written any others

HP - Harry/Draco, Severus/Draco, Remus/Regulus.  And I've written tons more, too.

Youkko Nitta - Carlos/Magira, I don't think I've written any others.

Merlin - Again, only written one- Arthur/Merlin.  Though there are others I don't mind.  I just haven't written them.

Fandom 30 Day Meme part 5-8

Very very behind because my trip had me offline for two days, and I'm still catching up on some things, so catch-up time on this now:

5 –If you have ever had a character try to push their way into a fic, whether your "muse" or not, what did you do about it?
Kingsley Shaklebolt. He was supposed to have a small part in my first NaNoWriMo, but as soon as he showed up, he started bossing me around. I ended up having to add stuff in the editing process to integrate him better into the story.

6 – When you write, do you prefer writing male or female characters?
I used to be afraid of writing guys. Then I got into slash, and never looked back. I barely write female characters any more. It's a bad habit I really need to get out of.

7 – Have you ever had a fic change your opinion of a character?
I was going to say I wasn't sure, then I remembered a little fic I read ages ago: Time out of Place by Cosmic. She's the one who made me fall for Draco, and I've never looked back.

8 – Do you write OCs? And if so, what do you do to make certain they're not Mary Sues, and if not, explain your thoughts on OCs.
No. For a very good reason. When I wrote Elfquest fic, I wrote almost exclusively OC's paired with the main elves. I know one *can* write OCs in a reasonable and interesting way, but there are so many characters in Harry Potter, there's really no need. You can find almost any sort of character to fill any role you need.
Not that I hate OCs--I have quite a number of HP OCs that I've RP'd. I just think there's generally little need to in fic.

Fandom 30 Day Meme part 3

3 – For each of the fandoms from day two, what were your favorite characters to write?

Elfquest: Well, I did mostly OC's, but the ones I tended to pull from the main group were Winnowill, Cutter, and Scouter, if I recall... (did I mention I had a thing for evil characters? ;) )

Voyager: Janeway, and to a lesser extent, Chakotay and B'Elanna. I think Tom was all Foodie, really...

LotR: The fic I found myself writing focused on Frodo. Never finished it, though.

Harry Potter: Say it with me folks... Draco. Yeah...anyone who got that wrong needs to start at the beginning of my journal and work their way forwards. ;) Also Harry comes to me a lot, and Severus, Remus, Blaise, and Regulus. And sometimes George. Oh, and Lucius, and sometimes Kingsley. And I'm probably forgetting a half-dozen more, too.

Buffy: Haven't written a whole lot, but...Willow. :)

Firefly: Again, I think I've written maybe three drabbles? Plus, the group's so small, it's hard to have favorites. But I suppose if I chose, it would be Inara, Kaylee, Mal or Zoe.

Youkko Nitta: Magira. Again, I haven't quite written enough to be sure, but I do love he and Carlos... :DD

Merlin: Despite RPing Merlin to [info]kabal42's Arthur, I have to say that my first answer here is Morgana. Then Arthur, I think, and then Merlin. I suppose I'll find out more in November, huh? ;D

Fandom 30 Day Meme part 2

2 – Name the fandoms you've written in, and how much you've written in that fandom, and if you still write in it.

My first fanfic I can remember writing (I might have written Star Trek or Star Wars stuff before it, but I don't remember anything specific) was in Elfquest. Chock full of OCs that broke pretty much every rule there is for Mary Sues. Thank god none of it ever made it online.

Then in college, I did a piece on the Dollenganger Saga by VC Andrews, but just one poem, and not so much fanfic.

As I said yesterday, my first published piece was with [info]foodie in Voyager fandom.

We moved on to LotR, but I don't think I ever finished the fanfic I was writing, though she posted several about the Hobbits that I helped with.

And then I moved into HP, and never looked back. I couldn't even begin to tell you how many stories I've written in HP any longer. I've been writing HP stories for about 7 years now, if I'm counting right. HP is also my first slash fandom.

Since writing in HP, I've done a few drabbles in older fandoms--Buffy and Firefly, a bit more in Trek and Elfquest.

And then Someone introduced me to Youkko Nitta... I haven't written enough there, but I do love playing with those two characters...I need to write more. :D

And of course, Merlin, my newest love, which will be the subject of my NaNoWriMo this year. :D I've done maybe a dozen or so drabbles, and a couple of fics in the fandom, but I promise there will be more.

And I think that's the lot...though I'd probably be terrified by what I could unearth on my hard drive...

Today's Fannish 5

I haven't been interested in these in ages, but I quite like this one:

What are your five favorite canonical friendships?

Harry Potter
  • Sirius, Remus and James.  I'd add Peter, but JK totally screwed him over to make sure that no one would ever like him.
  • Severus and Lily.  Aaaaaw...  :D
  • Harry and Neville, though more movie-canon than book-canon.  I love that Neville actually gets to help him and talk to him in the movies.
  • Severus and Lucius, even though it's never explicitly stated.
  • Albus and Gellert.  A fascinating idea.  I can't wait to see what the fans do with it. :D
Star Trek
  • Geordi and Data.  Not just symbiotic because Geordi was an engineer, but also honestly good friends.  I always loved their jaunts on the holodeck.
  • Ben and Dax.  I have a huge soft spot for Dax, and I always loved this.  How it grew from a male/male friendship to a male/female friendship with only one hint of romance the entire time Jadzia was host.
  • Tom and Harry.  These two were so fun together...  Little kids on a big ship. :D
  • Kathryn and Tuvok.  Everyone needs a Vulcan friend.  To tell them when they're being an idiot
  • Kirk and Spock.  Oh, all right, yes.  It's one of the things I hope this new version gets right.  They were each others' support, and I want them to show it, damn it!
  • Sam and Al, Quantum Leap.  They were really so great together...
  • Knight and Schanke, Forever Knight.  Ditto.  I can't express the number of times Schanke's stupid antics and Nick's reaction made me grin.  And yet, they were still always there for each other.
  • Buffy and Willow, Buffy the Vampire Slayer.  Only the best of friends can get away with calling each other such horrid things and smile about it while they're doing it.  "Quitter."  "Whiner."  "Bailer."  "Harpy."  "Witch."  "Bad seed..."
  • Cutter and Skywise, Elfquest.  God, I can't believe this wasn't at the top of my list.  These two are so perfect together.  Cutter the brawn and Skywise the brain.  They compliment each other so well...
  • Brian and Michael, Queer as Folk.  I know some prefer the romance between them, but if it had ever happened?  It would have destroyed everything between them.  They were never meant to be anything more than friends.  Though they were excellent at that.  They understood each other almost better than anyone else.  And put up with each other more than most of the others in their lives did.

Summarise/give vague clues to 10 of your fandoms in one sentence, then see who on your friendslist can guess each fandom.

(And just to make this tougher, I'm not putting HP on here...)

  1. They came from outer space in saucers.  They're our friends.  They only want to have us for dinner. V guessed by [info]beren_writes
  2. No!  Don't hug him!  *poof!*  *sigh* Just don't tell anyone, okay? Fruits Basket guessed by [info]calli_thaala
  3. She only died twice, her sister's a key, and her friends are a scary lot. Buffy guessed by [info]beren_writes
  4. Like Lost in Space.  But not. ST: Voyager guessed by [info]drusillas_rain
  5. To hunt, to howl at the moon, to find their ancestors. Elfquest guessed by [info]nyx_noire
  6. They are the One.  Who was, is, and will be. Babylon 5 by [info]ccmom
  7. Creature of the night solves night cases! Forever Knight guessed by [info]beren_writes
  8. What could possibly be wrong with a little ring? Lord of the Rings guessed by [info]beren_writes
  9. They've taken his land, she's got his love (though he'll never tell her), but they'll never take his freedom. Firefly guessed by [info]beren_writes
  10. Before there were six, there were three.  And there was plot, and it was good.  And there was believable love, and a fight for freedom.  And little teddy bears. Star Wars guessed [info]beren_writes
Well, all but one guessed.  I just put the person who guessed it right first.

This week's <lj comm

What are your five favorite villains (and why)?

  1. Draco Malfoy - There's just something enticing about a villain that has the possibility of redemption.
  2. Lucius Malfoy - Because, even irredeemable, he's powerful, blond, and hell, because he's played by Jason Isaacs.
  3. Severus Snape - Okay, not really technically a villain per se, but he doesn't get along with Harry, so he's not a "good guy" either.  He's just so complex.
  4. Bellatrix Lestrange - I don't write her much, or even read her enough.  But I do find her fascinating.  She's a woman in a world where she's surrounded by men, and she's obviously got more power than the men in her family (look at the description of her husband and brother-in-law in GOF).  We've only heard of two women DEs so far, I believe, and that makes her pretty unique.
  5. Narcissa Malfoy - Only vaguely counts as a villain, but she's against Harry, so there you go.  One would think, with her name, her major concern would be saving her own arse, but she honestly seems to care for her son and for her husband, and you have to admire that.
  1. Diana from V.  She was just a little self-absorbed, honestly! :D  She was always fun to watch, because even though she thought she was slick and in charge, someone always managed to see through whatever scheme she was up to.
  2. Winnowill from Elfquest. Evil with a capital EV. :P  I love her look: tall and slender, pale skin and hair longer than she is tall.  I love her confidence, even if she's actually internally as mad as Bellatrix Lestrange is, because she never allows her weakness to show, even as madness.  And Power, Power, Power.
  3. Miss Parker from the Pretender.  Another who had the possibility of redemption.  I loved her snootyness, but also how the memory clips show just how open and trusting she was as a girl.
  4. Ra in Stargate the movie.  Oh, lovely evil.  How can I not enjoy watching Jaye Davidson play an Egyptian god? :D  I can't wait to see who they get to be the villain in the next movie.
  5. Drusilla in Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel.  Crazy evil.  And siring your grandsire?  How effing cool is that? :D
See?  I like girls!  Just not...HP ones much.

A meme, gacked from [info]fiona_fawkes who stole it from [info]furiosity who stole it from [info]kerrikins:

What fandoms do we have in common?

My main fandom is Harry Potter, of course.  Books, movies, fandom...  I love it all (though GOF the movie less so...)  Just too much there I adore.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer and a bit less so, Angel.  Joss whedon is my god.  I adore him, his one-liners, his characters, and the way he makes his worlds so real.

Sims - and yes, it is a fandom.  I could spend hours or even days creating houses, characters...  I love them.  I love playing them.

Star Trek.  Not active currently, but the only other fandom I really published stories in.  I can't imagine a world where there wasn't Star Trek in my life.  Even with the mistakes TPTB made, there's still so much good there.

Elfquest.  The only other fandom I got involved in on a personal level, though I wasn't in any holts.  I have always loved elves, so really, this was right up my alley.

Firefly.  See Buffy/Angel above.  And may I add, he makes the best female characters ever.

Star Wars.  Really the first trilogy, cause the prequels were bad.  Lucas had a great group of actors, the story had heart, and the entire thing advanced movie effects tenfold.

Stargate.  Love the idea, love the characters, love the stories.  Just a great team all around.  And anything that includes this much myth is right up my alley.

Forever Knight.  Best-ever vampire show on TV before Buffy.  It sucks that it only made it through three seasons.

Fruits Basket.  People who turn into animals?  And boys who can't touch girls?  How can I not love it?

Other minor fandoms: LOTR, B5 (Ivanova, Talia and Marcus...  God, yes.), XMen, V (the mini series), Batman. Teen Titans, Star Blasers/Space Battleship Yamato, Oran High School Host Club (omg, twins!), Battlestar Galactica, Quantum Leap, Law & Order, Labyrinth, Beauty and the Beast, Lost, Shakespeare

Yeah.  Just a few.  :P  And likely there's more I've forgotten.

So, who do you like?

Fannish thoughts

So, today on the bus, I was struck by the differences between Harry Potter and Star Trek fandoms.  Maybe it's just that I wasn't heavily into the fic side of ST, or any RP, but it seems to me that for ST, so many of the "ships" out there are fan-made, which means an original ship, not the Enterprise (or any of the other well-known ones), and all original characters.  While in HP, everything seems to relate back to Harry or Hogwarts, and if you don't use mostly canon characters, no one wants to read it.  And it made me remember my time in the ElfQuest fandom as well.  Most writing for EQ is written around orignal characters, often in original tribes.

So now I'm wondering.  What do you think makes the difference between the two types of fandom?  Do you think it's the size of the universe?  HP's Wizarding World being so small, or ST being so large?  Except in EQ, the number of Elves was fairly small as well, and Star Wars is a huge universe, and yet most people tend to play with the pre-made characters that I've noticed.  So what makes the difference?

Leave a list of fictional characters in your journal that you would love to get a message from. It is your friend-list's mission, should they choose to accept it, to write you an in-character "letter" from a character on that list. Then they post their own list in their journal and the process continues!

Harry Potter:
  • Snape
  • Lupin
  • Draco
  • Blaise
Fruits Basket
  • Yuki
  • Ayami
  • Kureno
Star Trek
  • Captain Janeway
  • Chakotay
  • B'Elanna
  • Jadzia Dax
  • Skywise
  • Nightfall
  • Teir
  • Susan Ivanova (B5)
  • Teal'c (SG1)
  • Inara (Firefly)
  • Willow (BTVS)

Um, that's all I can think of at the moment...

This week's <lj comm

Name five fannish characters you would trade lives with.

In thinking of who I would list, I come up with two thoughts.  One is that this can't be a favorite character thing necessarily, because most if not all of my favorite characters are heavily angsty.  Draco will have a bad end; ditto Severus, plus his unhappy life; and look at Remus, Willow and Jadzia...  I'm just drawn to angst.  The other is that when I do narrow it down, they all seem to generally end up being the same character type: a strong, confident woman.  Jadzia, B'Elanna, Janeway, Zoe...  All generally the same character.  So, those two codacils in mind, here goes nothing...

  1. Jadzia Dax (DS9) - Strong, confident, intelligent...  I would give anything to have the amount of confidence she had in her pinky finger.
  2. Zoe Warren (Firefly) - Again, strong and confident, and never without a smile.
  3. B'Elanna Torres (Voyager) - The attitude, the intelligence.  I loved her from the first episode.
  4. Nightfall (Elfquest) - Here's one of the few who actually gets to live the happily-ever-after most heroes don't.  And boy does she deserve it.
  5. Leia Organa (Star Wars) - Got everything her mother didn't.  Maybe Bail made the difference?
Some Not-quites -

Willow Rosenberg (BTVS) - Adored her greatly, but her breakdown in season six was just too much to handle.  And Tara's death...
Draco Malfoy (HP) - Could have everything in the palm of his hand, but didn't realize what he'd need to do to get it all, so now he may end up being a casualty of the war his father has helped create.
Remus Lupin (HP) - We all know that Remus will never have a happy life, unless JK decides to do the "killing the werewolf who made him breaks the curse" rule...
Padme Amidala (Star Wars) - I loved her in the first movie, was rather dissapointed with her in the second, and was thouroughly disgusted in the third.  She had so much potential.  But apparently being a leader that young means that you don't have to worry about thinking after you step down...

New Fic: Thoughts on the Lost - Elfquest Fandom

Title:Thoughts on the Lost
Rating: PG for implied character death
Pairing: Skywise/Fox Fur
Word Count: 252
Disclaimer: Skywise and Fox Fur do not belong to me, but to a lovely couple named Pini.  No infringement intended
Summary: Skywise thinks about his lost lovemate.
A/N: So, [info]fluffyllama started a new archive, and I have joined, and since I suggested Elfquest (which I haven't written in more years than I can remember), I decided to write a drabble today.  All of the Elfquest stuff I wrote before was very MS-heavy, so I definately wanted to start from scratch.  But I've always been fond of the Skywise/Fox Fur ship, so I always hated the idea that she was dead.  So I wrote a little piece.  I hope people will give it a glance...
