A mini update and a rant

For those whom I have not told yet, I'm getting a divorce.  Things are still ongoing, and he's not being a total arse; I am not okay, but I am coping.  And I do have support.  Anyone in the Seattle area, if you know of an office job that doesn't involve answering phones *PLEASE* let me know...I really need one so I can stay in my apartment.  Thanks.

And now on to the rant.

I know some of the people who follow me here know my feelings about gender identity, but if you don't, here's what I think in a nutshell.  People are people, whatever bits they have, and shouldn't be forced to conform just because they look a certain way, or were born with certain bits.  You should be who you feel you are, not who people want you to be.  Simple as that.

That said, I've seen this growing trend, both at Polyvore and at Tumblr, for gender-swap, and I'm really not fond of it, but usually I can just scroll past and ignore it.  Despite my stated feelings above, it does nothing for me, and just feels more like wish fulfillment on the part of the fan than anything else.

But I do have to say that some really bug me for one important reason: taking a character of colour and making them white is NOT okay.  Ever.  For ANY reason.  I don't care how much you like your choice, it just feels wrong.

I'm not going to name names here, or point to a specific post, but I just saw a set at Polyvore which cast a white actor as a black actress's male version.  And he's an actor I adore.  But he's WHITE.  Perhaps if the other in the pair had been a black actor for a white actress, it might not bug me so much, but this seems to be a constant trend, and I really just had to say this to get it off my chest.

Both of the shows I can think of where I've seen this sort of thing have been the sole non-white character in the show, or as near to such as can be, which only makes this sort of thing worse.

I don't care if people link to this, in fact, please feel free to do so. I'd open comments if I knew I wouldn't get spammed to death by the bots, but if I get a request, I will.  I'd definitely love to know why people out there like this sort of thing, and what on earth would motivate them to cast a white character in place of a black, because otherwise it smacks of bias, even if not a conscious one.

ETA: Comment settings have been changed, but unless I have you friended, they won't show up until I've seen them and allow them to be posted. Again, this is to save me from the spam-bots, though I will delete comments that are racist/do not add to the conversation.

So please link this anywhere you feel the need.

I think this is a very important post to write, and you're probably even being too kind. (But you often are, and that's one thing I love about you ♥) It may not be conscious on the part of the fan, but, really, why?!?! If it, as you say, were a case where it happened other ways as well, then perhaps... But this, just no. I can't find justification.

I'm pretty sure most who do this are young, and/or don't have malicious intent to "whiten" the show they're doing it about, but want to have their favorite actors in those shows or roles, and haven't considered the implications. Still... Maybe it's time to twitter this... :P

You are most likely right. It's still very disturbing! I second the idea of tweeting it. Perhaps it will get more of an audience there.

I agree. Hence my rant. And I did. We'll see what happens. Maybe I should undo my comment settings for the day...

I haven't heard of this gender/race-swapping thing of which you speak...We must follow very different tumblrs! I think for me it reminds me of why I dislike slash in general. I don't like the idea of swapping sexuality just cuz it works for the fan better or whatnot. If a person wants to write gay fic, then create actually gay characters. That's how I see it, personally. I know you have very different views about it and I respect that, but that's why I have never really gone their in my writing.

A lot of what I've seen on tumblr have been photo posts "__ gender swapped" And a bunch of photos, sometimes including the originals, sometimes not, that show their alternative preferences. Like I said, not my thing, but...meh. But making them another colour--going from white to something else, not a big deal, but the other way round? No. Not okay, when there's not enough representation as it is. It's like turning a female character male. Just shouldn't be done. I'll show you an example tonight.

First, my sympathies on your personal situation. I've been there and it's no fun. *hug*

Second, I can't imagine why anyone would *want* to "whiten" a character of color. Dreadful.
Apr. 28th, 2011 01:43 am (UTC)
*hugs* Yes, I've seen that, though it sounds like yours was a far worse situation.

Like I said to Kabal above, I think it's just thoughtlessness on the people's part, but I've seen it happen a few times now, and it really bugs me.

Oh, and I meant to say thank you. :)
Apr. 28th, 2011 02:07 am (UTC)
You're welcome :)

I haven't seen it but I hope it's young people just not thinking clearly. It's like saying only white people have the right to be characters and that's so, so wrong.

(Which is really just me agreeing with you and restating what you said. I know.)

Me, too. I sort of feel like reposting them on tumblr at the very least with "whitewash" under them. But that would be picking a fight. :P

I haven't read my flist in forever, and I'm sorry about your divorce. I know what you're going through and it's not always easy. Just try to stay friends, it helps and make things so much easier.

Thanks, hon. No, it's not easy, but we're not out to get each other, so that's something. It just hurts.

I hope you and the bebe are doing well?

You know where to find me if you feel like talking, or just want a distraction.

Me and baby (not so much a baby any longer) are doing very well. He just turned two.

*nods* Still have you on IM. Same goes for you.

Aw, but he'll always be your baby. Niece is having her third birthday this week. Sis and her hubby got a taco truck. :D
